  • Check out how a G400 (non Max) holds its own vs a GeForce,,,,

    http://www.extremehw.com/reviews/3dv...sdr/index.html

Expandable . "Furthermore, the G400 even defeats the GeForce 256 in 32-bit color testing."

"In fact, I can't seem to figure out why the GeForce 256 performed so poorly in 3DMark '99 MAX, since it easily beat the TNT2 Ultra and G400 in all other benchmarks. "

This guy is Fussed. I wrote him a Letter from the Army of Matrox. hehhe

Look its my own personnal thread! I am talking to my self....again hehe

here is the letter and the resonse from the reviewer...
Every Bench I do with a G400 turns better numbers than your did. You got
    > 28 FPS @1024x768 in Q3 HQ with the Turbo Drivers . You are kidding
    right???
    > If you maybe noticed as of late, 32 bit color is very important. The
    > Geforce is pathetic in this area. "still slightly ahead of with current
    > generation 3D video cards."
    > Ahead of what?
    > You are not even using a G400 MAX. Was the G400 a 16meg or 32? You are
    > still compelled to give this 275.00 card a 9/10!! Your review is
    > sophomoric. 16bit color is the 3Dfx claim to fame I guess the bloated
    > Geforce is now the king! Hail hail. Bias garbage.

First of all, a G400 32Mb card was used (now explicitely stated in the
review). I would have liked to use the G400 MAX but unfortunately at the
time of the review, we didn't have one available for testing. I apologize if
the G400 benchmarks seemed misleading. They were intended more as general
comparison benchmarks than a direct one-to-one, GeForce-G400 card
    comparison.

    > In fact, I can't seem to figure out why the GeForce 256 performed so
    > poorly in 3DMark '99 MAX, since it easily beat the TNT2 Ultra and G400 in
    > all other benchmarks. "

For the record, this comment was referring to 16-bit color, an area where
the GeForce did actually win all benchmarks (except 3DMark '99 MAX).

    > NVIDIA's rotating demos were designed to show the possibilities and
    > hardware requirements of using objects with high triangle counts
    > NVIDIA's TreeMark demo simulates a more real-world gaming situation with a
    > complex tree model
    > You ran Nvidia Benchmarks? WOW what an Un-bias look into the performance
    > of Nvidia's hardware... Apple does the same thing .

Unfortunately since there is a lack of available T&L benchmarks, the NVIDIA
benchmarks were used. However, they were used more for a rough synthetic
benchmark with the Experience Demo being used for the brunt of T&L testing.
But thanks for the heads-up on this one, I added a small paragraph on the
benchmark page mentioning that the first two T&L benchmarks should be taken
    with a grain of salt.

Thanks for the email. Believe it or not, I do appreciate all feedback,
    positive or negative.

    Take care,
    Michael Brinton

Oh dear, we're losing another to the men in white coats here...

Anyways, thanks for the headsup - what's also interesting are the comparisons with the G400 and the TNT2 Ultra. I never realised the TNT2's image quality was that bad, plus the vanilla G400 32mb beats the TNT2 ULTRA in many cases.

But why was the g400 only tested on the athlon? What happened on the PIII and PII? (Although that might be a good thing!)

Thought his response was pretty well written...obviously by someone who wants to see the G-Force succeed. If I paid close to $300 for my vid card...I'd dig for the positive too...

Matrox's current 'marketing' scheme, if you can call it that, guarantees that the G400 will have a low profile. Just goes to show...takes research to purchase the best card for the job...

But haven't you felt that all GeForce reviews sound that way? As if they really, really want to say the card is great, but just can't quite bring themselves to flatly lie, thus are diasppointed and trying not to show it?

If it had only been one review that sounded that way, that would be one thing... but they ALL do...

LAMFDTK, at least this is a way to start your own super-thread... I won't participate in this one though to bring it to 500
