  • Win 98SE + PD + G200= death

Decided to apply win98SE patch to my system.
I reformatted and reinstalled 98, then patched with SE. Applied the appropriate VIA chipset drivers, then PD (several versions).
Anytime I boot using PD (instead of a generic VGA driver), the desktop freezes the moment win98 finishes loading. Note, the mouse pointer moves, but nothing responds to left click. Messing with the bios config doesn't help.

So, I started over, and left out the part where I install the SE patches. Now everything is stable. What is it about SE that is conflicting with PD? Has anyone solved the problem?

Win98SE apparently installs some very old G200 drivers. In VGA or Safe mode, use the Matrox uninstaller to get rid of them. Reinstall the PD 5.25 or less (See other threads for the 5.30 headaches on FIC/VIA boards), run the VIA 4-in-1's again and see what happens. You might have to turn off DMA for your CD-ROM as well.

      Been there, done that.

        Hi Folks,

Win98 install some old drivers? Isn't the usual procedure not to install Win9x with
standart VGA driver and then afterwards installing the proper VGA driver???

(Man, sometimes I REALLY want my non-plug&play days back... just some Jumpers
and that was it... no fancy OS to interfere
        with my config...)

SE does some strange things. Yesterday I was having problems setting up a machine (PA-2013 MB rev 2.0) I had to upgrade the BIOS to 1.15JI35 (to get it to stop setting the 22GB ATA-66 drive as UDMA4 which the VIA chipset can't handle). Then it wouldn't route the SBPCI64 properly. I had to take the sound card out restart, shut down, put the card in a different slot (it was in the shared ISA/PCI slot, put it in the slot adjacent to that one) Then it worked. Was having all sort of problems with PD 4.26 which shipped with the Marvel G200, until I installed 5.25 (5.20 wouldn't recognize the Marvel) As usual I can't get busmastering to work (I wonder whether it is the fact that we use 110V, 50 Hz power here in Jamaica)

When I installed my G400 32 Mb DH I had the same problem and tried to solve them by installing the latest via 4 in1 drivers. After some experimenting I found out that this occurred when I installed the IRQ routing drivers. Now I see on the Via web page this message:

If you are using Windows 98 SE, you do not need to install the 4-in-1 driver as the IRQ Routing Driver and the ACPI Registry are already incorporated into the operating system. Users with Windows 98 SE may update the IDE Busmaster and AGP drivers by installing them individually.

The keywork would be not to use the 5.30 with a G200 for now... any other 5.x drivers will do fine

The 5.30 drivers work fine with the G200 on the Intel chipset boards, it's with the SS7 boards that you have to fall back to 5.25
