  • A few questions from a new G400 owner

Just bought myself a new G400 (non-Max), and I'm happy as hell with it so far. Everyone in this forum who whines about this card should go buy an ATI card (which I just gave away); you'd kiss Matrox's feet and go to church every Sunday after realizing how lucky you are to own a G400. But anyways, I have a few questions to shoot to the experts in here:

    1) In some demos (like the G400 tech demo), I get jagged edges from hell; HOW can I mess with anti-aliasing on this card and fix this?

    2) I'm using the latest drivers (5.25.019) and the latest OpenGL ICD (I think) and Win98's screen savers look kinda pukey. The OpenGL ones are dog slow. Can I improve this?

    3) I have the Matrox tweak utility for overclocking (which I won't do), but is there a prog I can get to display my mem/clock speed settings?

I'm loving this card so far, and I have a relatively low-end box (P2 350 /w 128 megs). Any other tips on tweaking or otherwise toying with this baby are welcome.

Use MGAtweak, it works great, and shows all those settings. Cheers!

      Welcome aboard son !

Where's father Joel with the holy water ???

      LOL

      ...

Make sure not to use a colordepth of 24bpp !!!

That's the only colordepth that is not hardware accelerated. Use 32bpp for true color and 16bpp for high color instead.

For a clock readout, you could either use PowerStrip or GX Performance Tuner, both are available from www.entechtaiwan.com ...

Btw, excellent note about the whiners !!!
      Two thumbs up !!!

        Congrats on your purchase,
I would be very interested how the G400 handles the popular games on your system (assuming you play games) like quakeII ,Half life, shock system II etc. I too have a PII 350 and 128 Mgs of ram and am about to (if I can find one) purchase a G400 32mb. I have seen it mentioned on these forums that the P350 may be a little underpowered for this card, I'd be interested in your thoughts.
        Thanks.

        Dave.

Thanks for all the replies guys (and gals if that applies ).

Deejay: I do play games, but not too many of the 3d variety, although I'm getting System Shock 2 sometime soon. The only 3d game I looked at recently was the Unreal Tournament demo, which looks great and plays incredibly well at 1024x768x32bit with all details on high, but I haven't played much of it and haven't really messed with UT's settings enough to give an accurate picture. But in limited play for me it flew and looks amazing, and I'm not using a MAX either. When I get my games collection back, I'll put it thru its paces and post some impressions here.

Gurm: that link you posted for G400Tweak seems dead. Thanks for the reply though. I'll do some searching for it. Those jaggies MUST go.

Maggi: Nice system; did you take out a 20 year mortgage on that?

            I use G400Tweak: http://home.thezone.net/~bm/myfiles.htm

Which adds a tab to your display settings allowing you to turn things on and off, like filtering and sub-pixel accuracy and stuff, this might help. Also, make sure you're not in 24-bit mode, it isn't accelerated at all.

            2) I'm using the latest drivers (5.25.019) and the latest OpenGL ICD (I think) and Win98's screen savers look kinda pukey. The OpenGL ones are dog slow. Can I improve this?
This is a known bug. Some people they work for, some people they don't. The problem is that while the screensavers are in OpenGL, they use D3D mode change calls. This confuses the hell out of MANY ICD's (including ATI, 3dfx, etc. etc.) and they remain unaccelerated.

            3) I have the Matrox tweak utility for overclocking (which I won't do), but is there a prog I can get to display my mem/clock speed settings?
Someone already mentioned MGATweak. Give it a shot.

              The Rock,
Thanks for the input on the gaming slant. My next game will also be system shock 2, supposed to be awesome. I guess my humble 350 PII will cope admirably.
I look forward to your comments re performance as and when.
              Thanks again.

I don't know how you define "flying" for UT on the G400. I'm getting the distinct impression I should blow away Win98SE and reinstall, but I'm willing to futz with the registry first.

Anywho, if you want to quantitize "flying" for the G400 under UT, go to Tools, and turn on Timedemo Statistics. Play on Turbine against the computer for about 3 or 4 minutes. Run around a lot and shoot off the rocket launcher a bit, too, and get in some firefights with the bots. The numbers will tell you how your card is really doing. Come back and report your average, lowest, and highest frame rate here.

As for .sigs, here's mine. :-)
