  • Curious Q2 crusher results

I am playing around with benchmarks for my G400 Max (not OC'd).

I'm sure there is an explanation for this, and I'm hoping someone can enlighten me.

    My 1024x768 32bit (16bitZbuf) gives roughly 30fps for the crusher.dm2 timedemo. At 1600x1200 I get 26fps.

    Now for demo1 and demo2 I get about 60fps at 1024x768 and about 30fps at 1600x1200.

What does the crusher demo tell us about the
G400 Max. That is why, is the frame rate so high at 1600x1200 for this demo relative to the 1024 vs 1600 scores for demo1?

    Just Curious,

    BHT

    My system is pretty common:

    G400 MAX
    Celeron 300A @ 465
    128MB RAM
    Quantum 7.1 GB Drive
    SB AWE64 ISA

It tells you that you are CPU limited on that demo. Crusher uses large amounts of CPU intensive polys. WAY more than the stock demos. If your CPU could pump out more, so could the G400.

Look at Ant's scores on murc, and you'll see what the card can do with a strong processor behind it.

Thanks for enlightening me, the G400 MAX really is quite a great card, I'm glad I took back the TNT2 and exchanged it for the Matrox.

I have a Abit BH6 mobo, and if memory serves correct it can go up to a 550MHz PIII.

Any idea on what sort of performance gains I would get by moving up to a 500 or 550 PIII CPU (and take advantage of TurboGL). Any idea on cost (gotta go check out Sharky's cpu prices for this week).

At 1600x1200 my system already comes very close to the tests in ANT's in his TurboGL review. A faster CPU will help lower resolutions, but the card starts to MAX out above 1024 (pun intended). Hence, my OC'd 300A sure seems to be hanging in there. However, I'd like to upgrade my againg Linux server from a P133, so I'm itching for another reason to upgrade. However, finding an non-ATX slot 1 BX mobo that takes my old EDO RAM is getting tough.

      Cheers,

      BHT

TurboGL doesn't seem to offer much in Quake 2 at 1024x768 or greater above what we already have. It really shines in Quake 3. I have only tested an early beta so who knows what the release will be like.
