  • bios question

    Hello everyone.
I just installed my new harddrive.
    A IBM Deskstar 27.3 G.
When I first ran the Matrox HD benchmark
the test said 12.8 M/S. Then I upgraded the
bios on my Asus P2B motherboard from
rev 1002 to 1011. Then the benchmark went
    down to 5.4 M/S.
Anyone got an idead if the bios upgrade was
    the cause.
Now I have a really fast HD and still have
40% loss of frames. On a clean computer
    installtion.

    Please advice.

    The systems is as follows.
    P2 300
    Asus P2B rev.1011
1 Quatum 6.4 gig Fireball SE
    1 Western Digital 6.4 Gig
1 IBM Deskstar 27.3 Gig LBX
    Creative 64 Value
    G100 and RRG
    5.25 Powerdesk & 1.51 Vidtools
    WIN98 SE

    Hi Lundberg

Presuming that you have the big drive set up for AVI only (ie no volatile data), could you try partitioning it and then running a benchmark against each partition seperately ?

Sounds like the DMA is not working. Can you check to see if it is enabled. Sorry i'm not much help with W98. The speed differences are similiar to the difference between DMA on vs off in NT4.0

The DMA is activaded both in the bios and
        the software.

          Hi,

If you don't need some new features of a new bios, can you re-flash it back to original?

            Hi!

Make sure your video drive is a master, not a slave.

I stopped using an Asus P2B for video work (now use a Bravo Baby which works 10,000% better) because of a variety of problems, including dropped frames and generally poor response times. I am now using it only for non-critical apps, like typing this message. It currently has BIOS rev. 1008. My company has now adopted a policy of no new Asus m/b computers because of performance problems we have had over a number of them.
