I think we should wait until an officially
        announcement from the Microsoft.
I have a bad experience when installed
DX5 which is not from Microsoft site.

Well I guess you don't have external T&L engine then..
New DirectX releases add new features. I'd be stunned if old ones would work differently.

Well, new versions can always improve old
things, for instance SSE, AGP ... handlings,
                etc.

Anyway I have heard this is a beta version,
some people are having trouble with it and
the final is due by the end of the month.

                regards

Actually, the release version was finalized Friday (Yes, I have it). And it should be out within a month.

Is this the same version of DX that will be released with Win2K? Any chance it works under NT4 *crossing fingers*?

As far as I know, W2K is shipping with DX7. I've got DX7 on build 2072 (RC1) of W2K, and it works great.

I doubt you'll be able to use it on NT4, though.

I believe that link posted at the top is still RC3 (from the version #s). I haven't tried it myself (yeah right, download DirectX from some unknown source), but, like I said, I've got the final retail version. My DxDiag says all the files are final retail and not beta.
