  • G400 and DVD

Hi there. I have been trying to get DVD to work fluently with my new G400 and
a K6-2 300, but it seems the combination just won't do it.

In fact, I thought that G400 had motion compensation on board, but it does not seem to have it after all (or does somebody know differently?). Maybe I should have checked the specs before buying, motion compensation was at least part of early hype e.g. on this board.

Well, if I hack the registry to "Poor PC quality", I do get all the frames, but the
picture is not very nice any more.

Well, such is life, I suppose.

Just in case somebody has any suggestions- the kit details:

    M. (Still waiting for the Athlon, which will, of course solve all my problems...)

That's just not enough processor I think. Have you tried o/cing it? another 50-100MHz would make a big difference...

      Hi Meek,

Kruzin is right. With my K6-2-300 MHz I wasn´t able able to watch DVDs well with the G400.

Now with a K6-3-450 MHz DVD playback is very fine and I could change the quality to "Full Quality".

      Bye, Uwe.

I think the biggest problem is probably that your CPU is underpowered for software DVD, most users of the G400 using the DVD software mode are using 400MHz and up. The board scales nicely with increased CPU power but 400MHz seems to be a practical minimum. This is noted in many posts on the Forums so your best solution is a CPU upgrade.

Thanks guys. So I either live with the present quality or buy a temporary K6-2 450 while waiting for the Athlon. By the way, this CInemaster code is, I suppose, is somewhat 3dnow! optimised, but is it the best solution for a K6-2?

By the way, for most of what I do with G400 300 MHz is enough. Not for OpenGL unreal though... driving games are all very good, NFS HighStakes including. Of course it is nice to know that my frame rates will double if I double my processor speed....
