  • VSYNC and Performance question..

    Good MURC Folks,

This is nagging me a bit, and being a newbie to benchmarking and playing games with vsync off, here is my question.

I run my monitor at 85Hz for resolutions 1280x1024 and below.

When I ran the 3DMark99 MAX benchmark, I notice that during the texture test (the one with a plate/plane with lots of textures rotating) the animation would pause occasionally (once every one or two revolution). This is with vsync on.

With vsync off, the darn thing was as smooth as a baby's butt.

So, uh, after that, I have always had vsync off. I have not seen any visual tearing or artifacts thusfar.

Umm.. What is your opinion on this observation? Is this specific to 3DMark99 MAX or in general?

    Thanks.

    JamesA.

    VSync will not do that.
Are you sure that nothing else changed? Like AGP mode maybe?
Also always do these tests with nothing running on the background. Nothing.

Ok, how I understand this :
VSync ON : The picture will be drawn, if the beem starts at the top.
->In worst case this will half your refresh rate !
VSync OFF : The picture will be draw as soon as it is "ready" to be drawn.
-> In the worst case you will see a splitted screen with the old and the new picture. Or even more if your framerate is high enough. Depending on the pictures you will more or less see this "break".

      Thats all.....

But the worst case scenario is that one draw is missed. In that case the break would be 1/85 of a second.
Then again I don't know what kind of a halting James is talking about here.

Well here's an interesting question that goes along with this. Does your refresh rate have to be above a given frame rate in order to take advantage of that rate? Or even have to be a 'multiple' of that rate?

Like if I had something running at 90fps (right.) it would seem that if my refresh was at 70hz (which it isn't) i'd only (only?) get 70fps.

Is this correct? Or am I smoking the crack rock.

          Unrelated, but i hadda ask.

That's right. You cannot top the refresh rate if VSync is enabled.

              Buuri,

You know, I was wondering about the AGP thingy and my Celeron being the cause of the momentary pause (as in, nothing moves, and there is no tearing or disk activity, I think).

I will run the benchmarks again without any other non-essential background processes running.

Let you know when I get home (if I don't just go to bed exhausted).

All is clear now.... You wouldn't happen to know how to make sure vsync is enabled on an olden days G200 would you?

At least with PowerDesk 4 series I could but I'm not sure about PD5..
No wait, try those registry hacks from www.murc.ws

Groovy that, i'm still using PD4.

Is it just an option i'm overlooking then?

                    *phz.

OK. Ran the benchmark again and now performance is *slightly* better with VSYNC on. Hmm.. Must a fluke or something.

Oh well. Can't spend my time running benchmarks! Still haven't got a registered version of 3DMark99Max.

                      Thanks anyway folks.
