  • Matrox G400 demo problem

I have a problem with my Matrox G400 DH 32MB graphics card which I am using in a computer with an FIC 503+ motherboard (with a VIA Chipset and an Award BIOS) and an AMD K6-2 400Mhz CPU. I am using Windows 98. The graphics card appears to have installed OK but I can't run the demo program which makes me think that there may be something wrong with the setup. The demo program loads OK and I get an opening picture but as soon as I press a function key, which should demonstrate various aspects of the card, the computer crashes. Sometimes it just hangs and fails to respond, other times the screen (and sound) become garbled. In both cases the only solution is to reboot. Windows 98 reports no conflicts.

The tech demo is not the most stable peice of software around. It's not uncommon for it to hang up once in a while at least.

For continual problems, try to turn down the texture scale. To do this, go to where you installed the demo, and edit the matrox.cfg file in that folder. Near the bottom of the file is a line:
    texture_scale 1.0
lower that number in incriments of .1 (0.9, 0.8...), and see if that helps your problems...

        St Denys,

I had a problem with the tech demo when I upgraded my drivers from the version supplied on the CD to 5.13.

The demo would then lock up in random places, but usually no more than a few seconds into the rolling part.

When I flashed the bios to the latest version, the problem went away.

          St Denys,

Are you using the 5.13 drivers with the bios shipped with the card?

I had random lockups with the tech demo with the latest drivers until I flashed the bios to the latest version.

                Hi FastmanNTW,

Sometimes your post does not appear right away, but trust in GA, it will be there a few minutes later, or in the morning!

Just like the sunrise, birds chirping, etc.

Just be careful not to post anything if half the post's look like empty folders with no text by them. That means the server has entered another dimension in space and time, and your identity can be banished to the twilight zone and you will have to assume another.

You may want to try the G400 on another computer if you can. I have the same motherboard (FIC 503+) and it has problem with the TNT card which runs fine on a slot 1 BX board.
By the way, did you install the lastest VIA AGP driver ? If not, it may help.
