  • Any idea? System hangs up ..

New G400 32 MB Dual Head (latest Bios and
drivers). From time to time, let´s say once
per day, my system hangs up when running 3D
games . I have to turn it off, then Scandisk comes, etc.

    Nothing overclocked, PIII 500, 128 PC100,
DFI PX2BL mobo, Sony Trinitron 200 PS.

I don´t Know what´s happenning but I gathered it has nothing to do with temperature because sometimes the system hangs up just at the beginning.

    regards

The first thing to try with random lockups is a different stick of RAM (or you could try to slow down the RAM you have inthe BIOS)

My system has crashed a couple of times since installing my 32MB DH as well. Nothing else changed (old card was MillG200 8MB).

I have notice a vast increase in swap file activity though (I only have 64MB). Seems to freeze or crash during serious HD activity. I have since created a permanent 256MB swap file, but I haven't had any time to test it yet.

I was going to go out and grab some more ram, but prices have almost doubled over the last couple of weeks, so I'm going to wait a bit. I also keep forgetting to grab the new bios for the g400. What does it fix?

This could be a silly question you haven't got something scheduled to run. Also another quest while I think of it does it hang up after period of time. If it does it could be heat.

In my case, I've turned off everything in the background, including task scheduler, vscan, icq, ftp server, AudioHQ (sblive), etc. Just have volume control and pdesk in the systray. The freezing on mine is sometimes immediate, so it's not heat. I also have a plethora of fans, and mobo temp is 32C.

Tried the new bios, no dice.

I've now tried forcing agp 1x in the registry, and disabling the 32bit Z-buffer. Still freezing.

                Hi,

Have you tried disabling Bus Mastering?

                Ciao

there's a thought... how much of a performance penalty is there?

                    I´ve heard there´s a bug affecting PIIIs.
Apparently it occurs when you have two PIIIs
or when you install a pci device using IRQ..
The bug will be fixed by updating BIOS.

I´ve tried disabling Bus Mastering but the
                    penalty is very big.

                    Regards

Without busmastering you're better off with a G200 (with busmastering, that is). Try it for fun, the Tech Demo looks like a slide show...
