        Hi,

        Tried both a G400 and a TNT2 ultra (which I am using right now) and I can tell you that I will not hesitate a bit to buy a 4X G400 when they are out!! The TNT2 is a nice card but you really do not have the same amount of features as a G400!!

          Himself ... hi ..
          just to give you an advice ... turn vsync on with your G400 ... you'll see comparable results if not higher than your TNT ..
          the reason is :
          if triple buffer is enabled .. then vsync on is faster than vsync off .. if only using duoble buffering .. then vsync off is faster than vsync on ..
          hope this help ..
          i tested this myself on my G200 8 SD .. with triple buffer and vsync on i get higher score than vsync off .. also the hihger your refresh .. the higher your score when vsync is enabled

            Spider, I posted for the sake of AMD owners, your PIII scores don't really signify anything. My G400 scores were using 148/198, my TNT scores using 110/125. In fact the AMD K6-3 at 112MHz bus is 125 3dmark99max points higher that the K6-3 at 100MHz bus.

            The G400 scores are much lower with the same settings as the TNT, this is about as high as I can get them, no matter what. Vsync on does no better. Again, this is about AMD cpus, and a G400 vs a TNT 1, not a TNT 2. I think it shows that fillrate isn't important so long as you don't have a faster cpu. It also shows that the TNT has crappy texture performance relative to a G400, could be a 32MB video ram thing, but I noticed some PIII/TNT 2 scores at 640x480 being lower even. It also shows that the G400 need more work even in D3D.

              Can 3dMark tell the difference between tri-linearing filtering and tri-linear filtering?

              Also can it tell if a card is doing auto mip mapping?

                Did U notice that my test was run @ 1024x768x16 with standard settings like Vsinc ON not OC & your was @ 800x600x16...so what is your point ?....there time the G400 drivers rae not so much optimized for AMD users but that will change in next driver.rev...If U want...I outperform A CRETIVE LABS TNT 16mb with my older Matrox-Mill-G200 8mb SD @ 800x600x16 so dont tell me thet a standard RIVA TNT can match with G400...try this : play SIN (version 1005)@ 1024x768x32 32bit zbf ON & USE DEFAULT OPENGL not optimized one like RIVA OPENGL....try it first with your dam TNT then try the HIGHEST settings with G400..

                I tryed those RIVA product : Diamond Viper 330,Creative Labs TNT 16 & ASUS V3800 UTNT 32

                & with ALL those cards I got many PROBLEMS like BLACK WINDOWS,LOW AGP results,DARK SCREAN in OPENGL,shiped DRIVERS on CD newer worked...many driver revisons ,TURBO this , Turbo that, Detonator ,REFERNCE drivers, Manufactur DRIVERS ...ALL THE SAME S:IT !...actuly on NEW formated DRIVE with NEW instaled WIN98 I could not install any driver without messing around about 2 hrs & get system crashes few tim eawen with NEWEST REVISONS...that SUCKS so bad that I said NEWER,NEWER,NEWER again a Nvidia product...ah yess...did I said somthing about CRASHING IN Q2....or TEXTURE CORUPTION..ect

                ALL WHAT I CAN SAY... TNT drivers aro NO MATCH to MATROX one....

                I think THAT U TNT gys just provocate.. defenetly Nvidia LOST the battle THIS TIME !

                    Well, it seems to be a well known fact that the latest TNT drivers are well opimized for 3dnow!, and the G400 drivers are not.

                    I hope this will change. Receiving my G400 today, to run with my old K6-2... at least for a while.

                    Maybe Matrox could tell when the enhancements will arrive (well they never really came to G200, so why bother.)

                      With AMD cpus, it really really doesn't make much difference whether you use 800x600 or 1024x768, in fact I get pretty much the exact same scores with 1152x864x32 as I do in
                      640x480x16 on the G400 in the expendable demo, and the TNT 1 is almost identical along the ranges until it hits 1152x864x32, then it drops 5 fps.

                      I am just looking for ways to improve the G400 performance on my system, I could care less about pissing contests. I'd love it if the G400 were much faster, but I would like to see at least on par performance.

                      I have noticed quite a bit of driver quirks in some game demos, above and beyond what I saw with my TNT 1, but I am patient enough to wait for another driver release. X demo, the intro for instance shows the eye texture instead of the planet earth, all throughout textures jump, no such problems with the TNT.
                      Q3test works perfect with both, well other than the regular resolution changing crap. You have to adjust the gamma for dark games with both, no biggy. Both "star wars" demos, pod racer, and f1 squadron have severe texture problems on the G400 that don't appear on the TNT 1.

                      I wouldn't be surprised if it could, but I can't. As it runs though the tests it tries both trilinear and bilinear, so I guess they are there somewhere. I used trilinear with the TNT 1.

                      No idea about the auto mipmapping on the G400 side, the TNT 1 was set up to do it.
                      This is where a nice tweak control panel would be nice for the G400.

                      Again, PIII scores don't really matter here.
                      They won't help show where the G400 is slow on an AMD system, or where my results might be off due to some lack of tweaking.

                        The TNT 1 drivers are simply optimized in general for D3D, the only 3D-now! that might exist in the TNT drivers would be related to bace face culling. And the Intel cpus are so much farther ahead in 3dmark99max I'd say 3d-now! has very little to do with it.

                          I think Haig is trying to point out that TNT´s don´t do REAL trilinear filtering: they just dither mipmap boundaries, resulting in lesser image quality. It´s just the plain old bilinear filtering with a new trick. Matrox Gx00 do REAL trilinear filtering, that´s why trilinear % of bilinear is lower. It´s just because it´s the real thing.
