  • Dx6.1 memory hole?

Something funny happened when I reinstalled dx6.1 (just in case there
was any later revision of some files). Now dxdiag reports seeing 113 mb
of mem (AGP aperture set to 128), while earlier only 63 mb was seen.
So obviously something have changed, the current revision reported as
    4.06.02.0436.
Nevertheless, when running Tirtanium with big textures, the damn puter
still starts swapping as before. In OGL mode there is no swapping, I wonder
if this is related to a flaw in Tirtanium or bad execution in DirectX.

Any input to clarify this is welcome.

    I´m still using G200.

Hmm, that's strange - what does it say if you set the AGP Aperture to 256mb? The swapping should stop, but what does DXDiag say? You should get roughly half the Aperture setting + whatever's on the MGA.

    Cheers,
    Steve

      Steve,
I just entered bios setup in order to change AGP ap. to 256. Guess what?
      It already was

Of course I haven´t changed it, someone else must have.....

      Oh!NO! What can I say?

Still, the prob. with swapping is an item with Dx, not OGL, regardless of AGP ap. setting. I´m puzzled.

Is there any way to make this thread appear at the bottom instead of at the top after posting?

In Windows 98 with 64 MB I always had swapping in the beginning of a level with Quake 2. Then I changed my virtual memory setting so that it is permanently and doesn't grow.

The problem disappeared. You might try it if you already haven't

Yup, just set your swapfile to between 1 and 150Mb, preferably on a partition of it's own, and point Windows to use only that...

My DX6.1 says I use 126.0 Mb AGP memory...

              Indeed,

I have set my minimum swapfile size to 340 MB and my maximum size also to 340 MB. That way Windows never tries to resize it and that helps a lot.

Mine btw is so big because I develop in Microsoft Visual Studio 6 and their C++ compiler and linker almost literally eats memory. ;-)

I use VS 6 C++, and I have my permanent swap file set to 150, and have never had any problems with it.

                  That's because you're a special person, Matt

BTW, I forgot something... If you ever go about to re-install windows, do check that you point it back at the swap-file afterwards... stupid Windows doesn't remember, it even forgets sometimes it's got to use this swap-file and not the other 6Gb as well...

                    Yeah, yeah, yeah.

I´ve been there and done that. It doesn´t help in Tirtanium (BIG textures) and it doesn´t explain why D3D swaps and OGL not!

But thank you guys for trying, your kindness wet my eyes.
