  • Does Overclocking really give you something?

Whats the skoop with overclocking? I would rather go a few frame rates slower for a stable machine. I have upgraded and built bunches of PCs and stability is everything for my clients. What is realy achieve with an overclocked CPU or Video card?

An overall performance increase of ~50% on my system is reason enough !

But the fun with it, even when it is scary soemtimes is even better

If it wasn't stable I would have lowered the gain, but why should I when nothing else happens but everything being that fast ?

'Best bang for the buck' is my credo ...

      Well mr. Sailmaker,

if stability is your primary goal the Wintel PC platform isn´t the best choice. And of course stability isn´t the main thing for the o/c:er, speed is. And that´s what you get, plus the satisfaction of getting "more bang for the buck".

When the given conditions won´t let you sail any faster, adding a motor can really help

        Sorry mr. Selchow,

I really didn´t steal your expressions, it just looks that way. You see I´m so old it takes me a while to write down my thoughts - not to mention the time it takes to think them!

Also, overclocking keeps your PC warm on a cold winter's night...

              rekamlias,

It's really about being able to get faster performance in higher resolution modes. Overclocking a video card, like running ram at 124MHz bus, gives you more bandwidth, not speed, it just raises the speed limit.

If you do overclock, just remember that the memory has to be running faster than the chip itself or you won't see full benefit.

Thanks for your responce. I am just the kind of person who will try all this over clocking now that I have found such a nice source of info in this murc forum. Please be advised that I will be asking lots of questions in the future. Please say a pray for MAtrox and my g400max card. (I hear prayer gets them to you sooner)
