  • I'm going to buy a G400(vanilla) and had a few questions

I've been using a CL TNT card for a while and spend alot of time on riva zone and T3D and am really impressed with what reviews i've read about the G400 but I am really "green" as far as Matrox products go. I will be getting one this week and would like to know a few things if you don't mind.I don't think i'll need the use for multiple desktops so I was going to get the single, as far as the 300 vs. 360 ramdac goes will I really notice a difference on a 17" Shamrock .26 monitor? This thing isn't the best and I rarely go more than 1024x768 so would it just be a waste of money, not to mention that I wouldn't get a MAX for months because you guys all preordered a while ago.My other question is about stability. I use my system not only for games but work(office 2000, quickbooks pro) and really want to know it's not going to crash alot, I hear that the 2d is supposed to be very good. I rarely play open gl games, mostly WWII fighters,NFS3 in D3d so it should be fairly stable for that right? I would appreciate if anyone who's been using this card could answer so I would know if it's right for me. Thank you.

Driver wise, I've found my plain ol' vanilla G400 OEM very stable. I have a 19' Hitachi 751 that I run @ 1024x768 - 2D is very sharp. On D3D games, the G400 is very fast and excellent picture quality. Important safety tip though, if the game is meant to run in 16bit, make sure the G400 is set to that and not 32bit. I've run into some problems with running 16bit games when the card is set @ 32bit.

It's not the fastest in OpenGL, but it ain't no slouch either.

If you're doing office work, this card will make your life that much more enjoyable.

You can only get the 360MHz RAMDAC on the MAX. MAX only comes dualhead. So, if you are only going to get a singlehead, it will be a 300MHz RAMDAC. At that res, you wouldn't see much of a difference anyway (if any at all).

For me the card has been very stable (and I use it for more work than games myself) 2d is top-notch, and extremly crisp. You won't be disappointed...

Thanks- You guys all sound pretty cool and i'm looking foreward to getting and installing my new card, it sounds like I need to thoroughly clean my system of all the Nvidia drivers in my registry, inf folder and wherever else they may be to be sure there won't be any driver conflicts.
