  • G400 - Support a 720x480 Resolution? (Haig?)

Does anybody know if the G400 has a 720x480 screen mode? The G200 does not seem to support this. This is the ideal screen resolution for DVD (640x480 is too low, 800x600 is too high).

If not, how difficult is it to get this mode supported?

No. But it does an excellent job scaling to whatever resolution you do run (I run mine at 1280x1024).

I find whenever I scale an image, it *instantly* looks blurrier to me. Nothing beats going full screen to the same res. as the source image.

I would strongly urge Matrox to consider adding support for a 720x480 screen mode.
(Geez, even a Voodoo3 has support for this screen mode!)

Keep in mind that if you are watching an anamorphic title, the best resolution will be 1024x768 due to the increased verticle compression.

BTW - there is absolutly no blurring scaling on my g200 with the cinemaster software. It is nothing short of remarkable.

AndyK, Scaling is a way of life for DVD titles. It's absolutely required to view anamorphic titles on ANY screen, EVEN those with the 16:9 aspect ratio. When you take Bladerunner and view it on a PC, a regular TV, and a HDTV, what you see in every case is the result of scaling and aspect ratio conversion.

If you want to view an anamorphic title with no scaling whatsoever, you will only see a horizontally squashed image. I doubt you'll like that very much!

Besides, 720x480, the internal resolution of DVD, is a legacy from the NTSC era and made up of RECTANGULAR pixels that are taller than they are wide. It is therefore unsuitable to be displayed as-is on digital displays, where true square pixels are commonplace.

Not true, the best resolution for Anamorphic is 856 x 480, which the G200 at least *does* support, although it is hidden by default.

Will the G400 support this mode? I would imagine so.

Yes it would as long as your monitor supports it.

                AndyK,

856x480 is good for NTSC titles as long as the monitor can display it in 16:9 (Best if you have a 16:9 monitor). For PAL titles 1024x768 is ideal since the actual image size is 1024x576 (The DVD res is 720x576).
