  • multiplayer half life 1.1.0.4

I'm hooked now. Multiplayer is soooo much fun!

    Two questions:
    First:
I get 40-60fps in single player.
I get 20-30 fps tops in multiplayer.
The graphics are as good as they're going to get, except for that shearing
AGP 1x and OGL set to accuracy

    autoexec.cfg is as follows:
//autoexec cfg files from Leo and Kruzin
    // Video
    gl_ztrick "1"
    gl_dither "1"
    gl_polyoffset "2"
    gl_lightholes "1"
    gl_keeptjunctions "1"
    r_drawviewmodel "1"
    cl_himodels "0"
    gl_texturemode "GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR"
    brightness "2.5"
    gamma "3.0"
    gl_playermip "0"
    gl_picmip "0"
    gl_round_down "0"
    gl_texsort "1"
    gl_overbright "1"
    gl_palette_tex "1"
    r_decals "200"
    joystick "0"

    //sound
    hisound "1"
    loadas8bit "0"
    s_a3d "0"
    s_eax "0"
    s_reverb "0"
    _snd_mixahead "0.100"

    // MultiPlayer
    cl_rate "5000"
    fps_max "100"
    cl_allowupload "1"
    cl_allowdownload "1"
    pushlatency "-60"
    scr_conspeed "8000"

It drives me nuts that the kids 500mhz, 128 MB computer with V3-3000, which is hooked into the same hub, same internet configuration, same cfg file, gets 30-40fps.

They're laughing at me and my G400 and I want to settle the score.
    Any suggestions?

    Second:
How can I disable the windows "flag" key on the keyboard? I keep hitting it dduring play and the screen goes to black...

    Thanks in advance

Try having the other machine host the game, instead of bogging your box down with the server duties. Then watch his fps fall off, while yours climbs from the freed up CPU cycles.

But if you really want the last laugh, just kick his tail in the game. Final score means more than kiddies counting FPS.

When we play in a LAN game just in the family, I definitely see what you mean.

But I don't think this applies when we are playing on the internet, both from independent ip addresses, does it?

First up, set the push_latency -2x ping. It's currently on -60 which is OK if you ping at 30. If you ping at 150, set it to -300.

Also check your fps_lan and fps_modem settings. They might need upping a bit.

Also go into the advanced options and turn down the number of decals a bit.

Disable 'use high quality models' (or something like that) as well.

That should help you out a bit.

fps_lan and fps_modem are old commands that do not effect anything any more. In the last update to the game, they where replaced with fps_max (which has no effect on internet lag, since fps are no longer tied to net packets).

pushlatency should be set to -.5x to -1x your average ping.

You might check out this site for lots of good tweaking info that may help...

            Thanks for the answers.
The I am Half Life site is one of my favourites.
I'll play with pushlatency and see how that goes.
BTW, I did find a utility to disable the windows start menu key at
            http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/stori...,,000XE1,.html
If you try to go there via the link and it doesn't connect, just copy and paste it into the Location: window.

Actually, your pushlatency setting is wrong.

It should be set to -999 or -1000. What this does is automatically adjust pushlatency on the fly to the correct setting or in other words, as your ping changes this setting will change with it.

                That is very cool!
Using Game Spy now to find servers with very low pings. It helps as well.

Try "r_drawviewmodel 0". It hides the weapon and speeds up things a bit. I've found that I had very little problem adjusting to not being able to see the weapon. Although I do kinda miss seeing the cool animations. However, it's not worth the extra visibility and framerates IMHO.

I like seeing my weapons. Im still trying to decide whether to mousewheel or key them in. Sometimes I need to see what I have.

This morning I actually reached 60fps for an entire game in the stalkyards. The cfg seems to be helping.

                    Thanks everyone.

Try disabling EAX and 3D audio if you have it - that tends to eat CPU cycles.
Another thing is to reduce decals to 0, as this counts for bullet and explosion marks too.
There is also a setting something like r_dynamic 0 which turns of the dynamic lighting effect of firing rockets.
                      Try these and good luck.

Unfortunately I havent been able to sniper effectively since the 1104 release buggered everyones FPS :-(
