  • Baldurs Gate2:Shadows of Amn

It will be on the shelves next week and I just came across a disturbing report:
I would like to clarify the statement further. BG2 will work in 2D mode with any video card that has DirectX drivers. Off hand, I cannot think of any video card that doesn't have DirectX drivers. For 3D, you must have a video card that has a full OpenGL driver. There are many video cards out there that do not have proper OpenGL drivers, or have drivers that have bugs. You will have to consult the readme file to find out about the results of compatibility testing.
They did not list any Matrox card on the compatable list.
I've been counting the days for this game. Does anyone have any info on BG2 and the G400max?
    TIA

the ICD of the present set of drivers should easily qualify as "proper".does anyone else know differently?

I fired off a letter to Interplay support.
The article listed the TNT2 cards as being recommended for speed and OpenGl compatability, followed by the Voodoo series in 16bit. No mention of Matrox.

I'll be very sad if I have to negotiate with my kids for time on their computer with the V3

        I was over at http://www.bgchronicles.com
        and found this:
Matrox G400 cards: Matrox called me today and
informed me of their new drivers. I will be testing these new drivers today and I will post to this thread with the results.

I have just finished testing the new Matrox G400 drivers with BG2 and they work perfectly. You can get the new drivers here. These drivers are for Windows 95, 98, and WinME.
The "here" links to the certified 6.04 drivers.
        There is hope.

They mention the new drivers for WIn95, Win98 & WinME.
I haven't got the time to check out BG Cron's at the moment.
Is there any mention of problems under Win2000?
BG2 comes out next week, but in three weeks time the DVD version also hits the shelf.
For once I'm not going to buy on release day and wait for that lovely 'all on one disk' option.
It cost one penny to cross, or one hundred gold pieces if you had a billygoat.

              Paulr and DosFreak:
Glad to hear that there are other RPG fans
out there. Looking forward to taking Minsc and Imoen out of mothballs.
How about keeping in touch through the board or email on your G400max experience with BG2?

                Sounds like a plan
A friend of mine is buying the CD version on release day, so I'll see if he'll leand it to me for a night (while I sit and cry myself to sleep waiting for the DVD version) and see if it all works.
Can't see any reason why not, but then, this is the lovely world of computers we are talking about

I do hope you're not referring to me Paul!

If you are, then there's no chance you're getting your hands on my copy of BG II.

Unless ofcourse, my MAX is still dead (see 5.14 driver woes in the Hardware forum).

In that case, of course you can borrow it, as I won't be able to play it myself

I did say a 'friend' was getting it, so what made you think it was you? lol
Of course it's you, and as you have managed to break your computer big time I feel that me using BG2 for a night while you attempt to fix it would be a grand plan

I really hope BG2 will work on my G400. I have not been able to run a multiplayer game on IWD (Based on the BG engine). And I have tried removing everything in my comp. except my G400. I just locks up like it's it's nobodys business!

See this thread for a story of my problems...

Well guys. You are in for a treat!
The game plays well in OpenGl with the ICD as default driver. 800X600X32.
I didn't edit anything in the Baldurs.ini file.
Action in the fights is of the same speed quality as BG1.
I still need to have vsynch enabled or there is major graphic corruption. Thank goodness that Matrox released the mtstu200 tweak or I would be crying into my keyboard.

If you are out there, my refresh appears to be at 85Hz.

Yeah, it sometimes is. On my wife's TNT2 (it's HER game, heh) it works at 60hz unless we change it. On my G400 it did as well, glad it worked for you right off the bat.

Just got BG2 and installed it. I get some text corruption and a little bit of texture corruption at the edges of the screen (that one is caused by Vsynch being off though).

Anyone else have some text/font corruption with the game?

BG2 is broken in OpenGL(hardware) mode for a LOT of people. You don't lose much running in software mode, and the game LOOKS a LOT better in software mode on many systems. If you are seeing problems in hardware mode, try software mode, you may find you like it a LOT more. The hardware acceleration works for some, not for others, and no one seems to have isolated why this is happening. I suspect it's a chipset/BIOS issue.
