  • HL-CS too slow under win2k + 5.2 drivers.

I recently got counterstrik, and god i am hooked. The problem is that the game is too choppy making it frustrating sometimes. Any suggestions on improving performance?

    My system:
    abit bx6 rev 2
    celeron 400 oclocked to 450 (75mhz bus)
    g400 max (not overclocked), agp2x, irq 11
    128 mb
    win2k sp1
    IBM 7200 rpm hd
    sb live, liveware 3

The game hangs around 20 fps (D3D) when there is nobody on screen, but when the gun shootouts start fps drops to ~10, making it hard to aim.

I tried the halflife's autoexec.cfg maker at tweak3d.net and it's doesn't help much. OGL is even worse than D3D.

My buddy has a celeron 450 (300 o'clocked) with a TNT 1 (that's right, TNT one), and he gets fps around 60. How is it that it blows away my g400 max?

    What do I do?
    Thanks!

I run a box with virtually the same stuff

    and i get around 45fps @ 1024x768 with D3D
must be some setup problem on your box

opengl however, is not playable, it gives me a big black box on the screen when it loads up, and when i try to press esc to get rid of it...my machine freezes

    PII450 (OC from 300)
    256Meg ram
    Abit BE6
    G400 DH 32Meg (running at 142MHz i think...)
sblive xgamer with liveware 3 for win2k
    Win2kpro sp1
    dx8

      Try AGP1x, since you're over-clocking the FSB.

Also, you've said nothing about resolution.

I have only few problems, running CS on my computer.

        My setup:
        Win2000 latest servicepacks etc.
Matrox g400max latest drivers, bios etc.
        256mb ram
        800mhz p3
        sblive

I run cs in OpenGL, purely icd. I get enough frames, and only have problems when starting a lan game (Black box in top left of screen).

The latest drivers and the latest bios did the trick for me. Somebody actually pointed that out for me on this board (thx).
        Powerdesk 6.20.029, Bios 1.9 - 33 DirectX 8.0

        Hope this helps?

          Thanks for replying!

I can't believe SockPuppet's getting 45fps at 1024. Can you give me all your settings? Bios, irqs, everything. Is there a BIG difference between pII and celeron?

I'll try agp 1x and see what happens. I even oclocked the card to 200mhz and still slow.

btw, I run it at 640x480. Could the sound card have anything to do with it?

Will keep you posted on what happens.
          Thanks Again.

CPU matters you know... especialy for G400. Your bus clock is not very good either...
Oh... and running CS on W2K on 128 MB of ram is not a very good idea...
Also, switch to OpenGL and lower resolution...
I run CS on 800x600 on K7-700 with 256 MB ram and get 40-70 fps...

              *black-box when starting a server*

just hit escape, then "resume" game - the box should not be there any more

Wulfman, doesn't work for me, because opengl freezes my machine when i try to resume
