  • Am I the only one using OpenGL for UT?

    Just wondering...With pd6.10 and v436 of UT, I reckon I average about 10/15 fps more than I do with d3d...about 70fps (640*480 everything on low) as opposed to under 55.

    My spec...
    Athlon 500
    128mb ram
    g400 dh, 32mb

    Just a couple of questions..would turbo gl help (I expect not..)? and is there anyway to change the brightness other than general windows display setting? Ive tried another opengl dll that claimed to do this, but performance was terrible with major graphical glitches.

    Finally one other observation is that you cannot minimise then maximise the window when using ogl.
    thx

    As far as I know, you are the only one.... but if you are happy with it, great.

      Maggi has his set to OGL

        one other thing that someone might be able to help with...In Opengl my max. fps is around 140 (Ive even managed to get over 200 on occasion). But in d3d the max I can ever get is about 80. Any ideas?

        Thx

          Influx, it's a known limitation of the UT engine.

            There are more z-buffer errors. UT's OpenGL doesn't have the fix for 32-bit z-buffer like D3D.

              Thx for the replies guys.

              Just thought I would mention that I play on line quite a lot and the only thing Im really worried about is the smoothest possible game (and I really dont want to have to buy a Geforce). I used to get the feeling b4 with d3d that I would loose frames at vital moments making it hard to aim. Thats the reason I brought this

              Thx for the help.

                Hey InFluX,

                lemme know if you need help in tweaking UTs OGL settings (OpenGLDrv.ini that is).

                Cheers,

                  Wow, thanks a lot Maggi, any help would be gratefully recieved!

                  I must admit I havent tried to mess with OpenGLDrv.ini but like I said I did try another opengl.dll, with some recommended tweaks to the UT config file (from Loki I think). Unfortunately this was aimed square at Geforce users and did weird things to my G400 (It was as if the z-buffer didnt exist, lol!). Since my last post I have discovered that if I put in loads of bots (7 godlike hehe) things start to chug quite badly. However, if I fight one bot (or even play online) performance seems to be pretty good. Also, I should repeat Im not that bothered about visual quality, more fps...

                  Is there any more info you need from me?

                  Thanks in advance

                    UT runs perfect on a Geforce card using OpenGL. (No problems at all)
                    C:\DOS
                    C:\DOS\RUN
                    \RUN\DOS\RUN

                      The compressed textures look quite nice using a GeForce in OGL mode too.

                      Even so, I missed my G400Max too much, so I swapped back I've also put my old Voodoo2 SLI cards back into action for UT.

                      Chris.

                        Here we go ...

                        add the following lines to your OpenGLDrv.ini ...

                        [Matrox Graphics Inc./Matrox G400]
                        MinLogTextureSize=0
                        MaxLogTextureSize=11
                        MaxLogUOverV=11
                        MaxLogVOverU=11
                        UseZTrick=0
                        UseMultiTexture=1
                        UsePalette=0
                        DoPrecache=0
                        ShareLists=1
                        AlwaysMipmap=1

                        [Matrox Graphics Inc./Matrox TurboGL for G400]
                        MinLogTextureSize=0
                        MaxLogTextureSize=11
                        MaxLogUOverV=11
                        MaxLogVOverU=11
                        UseZTrick=0
                        UseMultiTexture=1
                        UsePalette=0
                        DoPrecache=0
                        ShareLists=1
                        AlwaysMipmap=1
                        This will set it to max quality and if you wannna gain performance, lower the MaxLog-values ...
                        (11 means 2^11=2048 pixels as max texture dimensions, so '8' would result in 2^8=256 pixels as max texture size for example)

                        Cheers,
                        Maggi
