I've also have problems with Crimson skies.
Game starts but it lock's sometimes in the beginning of the game(freeze picture with distortion)or it runs for about 5 sec and then it's freezes completely with high tone.
I always have to reset my pc.
I've already installed newest drivers and bios.Reinstalled directX7a.Removed and reinstalled the game itself.Changed aparture sizefrom 64=>256.No irq conflict or charing.
      I've got G400max,soundblaster 1024 live PIII650@793(backtdown already)256 MB PC133 ram.I'm usingMicrosoft force feedback pro joystik.Still no go.Other games work normaly.

I have finished this game on my g400, so there is a solution

You should lower the "lighting" tab (I have the french version so I don't really know the real name in english).
It's the one before the textures details.
Lower it and every step you'll see that your game will survive longer, my setting is now on "Low" and that's enough to keep it from crashing everytime.

        That should solve your problems.
