    Help! Matrox and Dell "can't". Below is the thread with both their input into my problem, which is a black screen hang during civ2 gold which was purchased last month.
    Appears to be uncertified sb16snd.drv, sbawe32.drv, sbfm.drv that directx7.0a is objecting to.

    "I'm having black screen hangs on various games. My hard disk crashed, so had to rebuild, pulling latest drivers as necessary from manufacturer's websites.
    Millennium II AGP 8mb; Dell P2-266; 128mb; Win98SE; DirectX7.0a; latest Matrox drivers, tried both the specific card or the general driver for the series, and both cause same failure. Have fully re-installed 7.0a a couple times with no change.

    dxdiag, drivers, shows "Problem:"
    "Several files (sb16snd.drv, sbawe32.drv, sbfm.drv) are uncertified, which means that they have not been tested by Microsoft's Windows Hardware Quality Labs. You may be able to get a certified driver from the manufacturer of the hardware device."

    Did this card come in your DELL system? If so, you need to conatct DELL for support in the future.
    Upgrading your drivers to the most recent version should clear up the problem as long as they were released after your version of Direct X.

    I pursued the Dell side to solve this problem, and as expected they are no help. Following is their answer to this issue.
    "Thank you for contacting Dell Online Support.
    Unfortunately, we do not offer or have posted Matrox Millenium
    II drivers for Windows 98 as it was not an option when the card
    was released and we did not install the card on Windows 98 systems.
    There are, however, drivers on the Matrox website that may work
    for your card. http://www.matrox.com/mga/support/drivers/home.cfm

    You may want to check out the LATEST DRIVERS link and the UNIFIED
    DRIVERS link."

    I downloaded and installed both of these, trying one after the other, with no effect on the problem. Still a black screen lockup at certain duplicatable points in the game. Ctl-Alt-Del / End Task aborts ok.

    What do I do at this point?

    For gaming issues you need to post in the Gaming forum but we do not supply tech support for DELL OEM cards. You can always try on www.murc.ws
    They are very knowledeable and should be able to help you out.
