I'm afraid with Win98 you are pretty much stuck. I noticed the Win2k beta had a workable uninstall program, but there is nothing similar in the Win9x version.
It's possible you might be able to remove key DirectX files (if you know what to look for) and reinstall DX7, but you'll be left with incorrect registry entries (unless you have a prior registry backup).
Re-installation of Win98, or waiting for the final DX8 might be your only hope.

It's very easy to remove directX.

First you have to start in savemode. Go to windows/system and delete the following files.

      ddraw.dll
      ddraw.inf
      ddraw.vxd
      ddraw16.dll
      ddrawex.dll
      dinput.dll
      dinput.vxd

After that start regedit en go to the this key:

      [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\SessionManager\CheckVerDLLs]

Here delete the keys with the same names as the delete files.

Reboot your system and install the directX verion you want.

If this doesn't fix the problem please say it because I only let you delete the most important files.

There's more files than those you should remove. Start directx diagnostics program and remove every file listed. Then reinstall directx.

Hi Oracle, there's a program that you could try called DirectX Uninstaller. I never got to use it (just found about it after I reinstalled Windows) so the only thing I can say is "use at your own risk".

The other option is to reinstall Windows 98, as that'll reinstall DX5.0 for you (no matter what you want ), or DX6.0 if you have Win98 SE.
