  • Beta 6.01

Are the Beta drivers stable enough to make downloading them worthwhile? Are framerates better in Quake and Unreal? After uninstalling my old drivers will the new drivers overwrite turbo GL or will I have to do something to eliminate the turbo ICD? Should I wait for the final version of the drivers? Thanks in advance!

I've been running them for a few weeks now and haven't had any problems. I don't know about frame rates. Haven't checked. Unreal plays just fine IMO.

I'm not sure about the Turbo ICD...

I to have been using the 6.01 Beta version, and am having no problems as yet. Def worth the download.
      Turbo ICD, don't know.
      Go for it.

The 6.01 beta made framerates in Q2 at 1024x768 faster by about half an fps (69.5 - 70), but made everything go 'psychadelic'. Black walls and cielings, rainbow flecks everywhere, flickering display. Ugh!

It improved my Q3A bench marks to the extent that I could get a flat 40 fps in 32bit vertex 1024x768 instead of 39.6 with no errors, but I still want to play the older game of Q2 quite a lot.

So I uninstalled 6.01, reinstalled 5.52, but kept the bits I was prompted by windows to keep. Now my Q2 is about the same as with 5.52 (although you only need to run it once to get the highest fps score at 1024 instead of twice) and Q3A is just that touch faster and more stable thru all the resolutions and detail settings.

Are there still issues with 6.01 Beta that prevent MGATweak from overclocking the G400? That was the main reason why I haven't upgraded to it from 5.55.

WarFlail, MGATweak has no issues with 6.01.
Maybe you are thinking of Matrox Tweak Utility, which doesn't work with the 6 series.

Is that screen flicker to do with the 6.01 drivers being beta? The only other drivers i've tried are the 5.30 + TGL (only drivers that would work reliably on my old ss7 motherboard) and they had the screen flicker. I've recently upgraded to a duron and am currently running the 6.01 beta drivers on the Asus A7V board and the screen is still flickery, and I just assumed that was coz matrox can't for some reason bypass that problem...

I know the drivers currently posted are beta 6.01 and I think that's what I'm using (I loaded them about one month ago), but according to my system info the PowerDesk driver is version 6.10.21.

Anyway, these drivers have been working fine for me (G400, bios 1.6-25, PIII-450, Win98). I don't think I've had any problem that I can attribute to these drivers. Games I play regularly (kinda) with these drivers are UT, Q2, SystemShock2, and HalfLife (without TurboGL). All run at 1024 x 768. Frame rates (UT) in the 30's; Q2 and Halflife are a little higher; SS2 a little lower.

I updated from version 5.41 because SystemShock2 would not run with that version. I can't really compare frame rate performance between the two versions with actual data (I don't seriously benmark), but the new beta drivers seem to be a little faster.
