  • Q3Arena+SMP in win2k

Allright, this might have been covered before, but who knows? I was all excited to finally have my dual board (ABIT BP6 with two 500mhz Celerons) and decided what better way to see how it runs than running Quake3 in SMP mode. Well to my shock and horror, it freaked out, the textures were all wrong, I couldn't even see anything, even the fonts that display when it first starts to load the demo where garbled. Could it be that OpenGL for the G400 doesn't work in SMP yet? I have the Marvel G400, so my drivers are the 5.06beta Not the newest, I guess, but that's the drivers listed for the marvel on Matrox's page. So am I doing something wrong? Or is that just it, SMP support isn't there yet in the OpenGL drivers?

System Specs for those that need to know:

Abit BP6, 128mb RAM. 2 500mhz Celerons, SBLive Value, Marvel G400, 3com network card, USRobotics ext 56k modem, adaptec 2940UW, Pioneer DVD-ROM (the slot load, love it)

The last time I checked, SMP didn't work in Quake3.

It's all very mysterious. I don't think Matrox or 3dfx ever had it working. NVidia had it working and then broke it (although you can get it going with a little patience). Forget about ATI. They can't even write a Windows 2000 driver, much less one that works in SMP. I suspect John Carmack launched a thousand headaches when he decided to make Quake3 SMP capable.

The GLX works in SMP in linux sort of, it is very jumpy but I theorize that's just something wrong with my set up, I'm still working on that. Oh well, I just need to find more programs/games that support SMP, I don't even really like Q3A I just installed from a friend to test it out. Tribes 2 supposedly supports SMP, at least according to www.2cpu.com but I don't have that one.

The 5.06 and earlier drivers would completely die in SMP mode. Actually, 5.06 made it so you could run in r_smp=0 without crashing, but r_smp=1 would make the icky textures.

5.10 fixed that, and the textures are fine. However the game will lock up a few minutes in no matter what, so it's still not right. But they're making solid headway (or so it seems!) into the issue.
