  • I miss my G400 :(

Zuofu and I traded cards so he can overclock his PC. I gave him my G400max and I recieved his S3/Diamond ViperII. The 2D performance is pathetic! The D3D performance is pathetic (even though the openGL's cool)! The DVD is... pathetic! Well that's just because I can't find a good player.

I want my G400max, even if it does suck with games. Hell, we should all just get GeForce 2's and stop complaining about our Matrox gaming performance, hehe

Why do you say that the G400MAX sucks in games? I don´t understand.

He probably has an extremely low-end processor, and is trying to run some of the more intense games that are currently out. Admittedly, the G400 cards like faster processors, but that still doesn't mean that they suck. I still love mine, even though I use a GTS in my main gaming system now, just for the extra speed/resolution (usually only one or the other, and not both, depending on the game) that I can get with it. My Max was fine for most things at a minimum of 800x600x32 resolution though, and will continue to do service to my family for games (when we have more than one person that wants to play) and especially for all image and video editing purposes.

As far as trading it for the S3 stuff- arg!! What WERE you thinking? I only gave up my Max in my main system for a GTS, and even that was a marginal decision, requiring a good bit of wishy-washiness on my part before I finally coughed up the dough.

        Anyhow, live and learn, right?

          I had the misfortune of trying my G400 in a friend's K6-2 550.........slow......not much worse than a Voodoo3 2000 though.

However, he happened to have a Geforce 2 GTS around for a computer he was upgrading to. It wasn't much better for UT, but in Q3 when it's T&L could kick in, it was LOTS faster

This kinda reminds me of a bad country song, which goes kinda like

"He got the gold mine, you got the shaft!"

I would insist on trading back because you did not realize that you were about to get Pearl Harbored by a piece-o-crap diamond multimedia video card.

You traded the Max for a ViperII?? A 3D decelerator? (hehe, remember the S3 Virge??) Get your G400 back. Even if the G400 "sucks" with games, I would never replace it, except with another Matrox card

He's a good friend of mine, and both cards suck (by today's standards) anyway. I'm going to get it back within a few weeks.

I have a 433mhz celeron, so T&L (the "decellerator") helps a bit [until the game crashes horribly].

                    Man, I had a S3 Virge on a K6III 450@500, then got a G400MAX. I could play FULL SCREEN!
Got rid of the Virge and the K6III, kept the G400MAX. Actually, I sold the K6III, can't give the S3 Virge away!

WAZZAP DAWG! Actually, I might take the Viper II back really soon if it will work on my new config..G400 is slowing down my 915mhz computer. I need 4000+ in 3DMark2K desperately. And those little Z-buffer specks in Tribes are pissing me off In the mean time get Power DVD 2.55, it looked awesome before we "upgraded" to 3.xx. I'm thinking of getting a Radeon...but $269 is still a bit steep.

BTW, never ever diss the Virge...Yeah it de-celerated games, but bi-linear filtering was damn amazing in 1996. Of course, for *cough* stupid *cough* people who got a Virge in their 1998 OEM computers, I have nothing to say to you....

4000+ in 3DMark and a dollar will buy you a cup of coffee.

The vote is in... Never accept a virge, even free

Well..not this day in age with Gigatexels and shit... But back in the day (1996), I remember when cards like the Diamond Stealth VRAM and Matrox Millenium II were da shit and Virge was amazing. S3 Vision 968 is one of the best chipsets I've ever owned.

S3's have pretty much always sucked. They had a lot of problems with the XFree86. I had a S3 Virge for a while, yuck, and yes, this was back when they came out. I loved my Millenium II when I bought that (actually to this day it still sits in my mom's computer, and plays Diablo II ok even) Well just my two cents. Personally I have the Marvel G400, and I love it. Wouldn't trade it for the world. Plus it shines nicely even in resolutions as high as 2048x1536x32 on the desktop. Now that's what I call multi-tasking space. (now if only I could get the 180hz refresh rate to work with Diablo2 in Win2k, damn lack of monitor settings) Laters.
