  • MGATweak vs. Matrox Tweak Utility vs.?

    Hi,

This might have been covered before, in which case I apologise in advance - I'm but a mere mini MURCer! My question is this: What have you found is the better overclocking tool for the G400 as it relates to 3D games?

I currently use MGATweak but notice that there is a tweaking utility that is officially from Matrox (it's been out for a while). Which is easier, more effective and more stable? And to what level have you been able to overclock without seeing deterioration on screen?

    Thanks in advance,

Sorry that nobody answered by now. I'm not a big gamer, but I've gotten better results with MGA Tweak. My system is slower than yours, but using 3DMark99 with my G200 I get about 2300 with Matrox and about 2600 with MGA with the 5.41 drivers. Keep in mind that the 6.00 drivers will not overclock with either utility. Matrox will not run at all and MGA only gives you about a 1 or 2% increase. I haven't loaded the newer 6.01 drivers yet to see if they overclock with either of the utilities.

Thanks for the reply, RAB. I didn't know that MGATweak is not much help with the 6.0x beta drivers (I'm using 5.55) but that alone convinces me that it is not worth upgrading drivers just yet - since I don't have a MAX, I am forced to overclock to get decent framerates out of the G400...

Okay, so MGATweak is the better of the two choices. How about PowerStrip? Any positive gain with that?

I haven't used Powerstrip in a long time. It worked fine, but if I remember correctly, it didn't provide as much control.

Try them all. Only that will tell you which one works best for you. Once you start to get strange dots or lines, you've gone too far. Back off a bit and see if its stable at that point once everything is fully warmed up.
