Messiah, PD 6 beta and fog?

I put aside Messiah until Shiny released a patch to fix the crashes and other problems. The patch has come, and sure enough, no more crashes at all. The game plays fine. But what's odd is that when I load a saved game, sometimes there's great (spookey!) fog; other times not. It happens entirely randomly (same saved game, or at other "foggy" locations). I don't remember the fog at all prior to the patch or PD 6, so I'm wondering if either partially fixed something. Anyone else notice this? No big thing (i.e., not worth going back to PD 5.55).
