I think we all can thank Derah for good explanation what was wrong and so on.
Usually those are like: " Game X crashes, should I buy GeForce?! "

    So let's say it together,
    Thanks!

I hope problem can be solved.

5.52 install ICD and Half Life

I have been successfully running games in OGL with Turbogl, D3D and regular desktop 2D with the 5.41/TGL combo for months.

This morning, I installed the 5.52 drivers as follows:
    Removed Turbogl files from games
    Removed Turbogl(mgaturbo etc)
    Used Matrox uninstall utitlity
    Reboot
When prompted to install new drivers installed Standard VGA PCI
    Reboot
Used Run and browsed to the opened w9x_552 folder to the setup.exe.
    Reboot.
While rebooting , received this Error Message
While initializing VKD, Windows Protection error, Restart Computer
So, I restarted the computer and it came up in Safe Mode by itself. Everything looked ok so I restarted computer again and no further error messages appeared.

Having dutifully read and searched this forum as well as the Matrox tech support, I chose not to install the Turbogl to run applications in OGL.
Ran Half Life and Opposing force to check the OGL function. When they would run, there was massive shearing, sparkles, jaggedness, text appeared as colored bars, and then crashed with
Half Life illegal operation, invalid page fault in DDRAW.dLL
Trying to Esc to HL menu crashed computer with parallel white bars across monitor.Same with Opposing Force.
These games ran fine with 5.41 and Turbogl.

OK. I didn't panic. IRQs were fine. G400max at IRQ 10, shared only with PCI Holder. No duplicate devices or conflicts observed in safe mode. E790 monitor has proper inf file installed and G400 recognizes it. Refresh rate at Optimal. pdkernel.dll and pdeskcmd.exe are both 5.52.015. No pdglutil.exe, mgaturbo.dll or pdglures.dll on drive. Windows/system/opengl32.dll is present as are G400dd32.dll and G400icd.dll.

Unistalled the 5.52 drivers and reinstalled by the method described above. No error message this time.*whew*

Tried running HL and OpFor with both previous saves and new games, selected default OGL. Games still crashed and had to reboot.

Thief:The Dark Project and Baldur's Gate run beautifully. My problem seems to be with OGL.

Question1: Can you suggest a better or different way to install the 5.52 drivers?

Question2:My reason for installing them is to play Thief 2. Would the 5.50 drivers be a better comprimise for Thief and HL?

Question3: How does one direct an application to find the G400icd for OGL?

I didn't reinstall DX7.0 although after the error message I did do a DX diagnostic and everything checked out OK.

I have since installed the 10151016 OP Force patch which does let me play without crashes Unfortunately,I can now see the disgusting shearing of parallel bars when the point of view turns 360 degrees. I had this problem under control with the 5.41/TGL and now its back with a vengeance.grrrrrr.

Reinstalling DX7.0 is a pain but you're right. I should give it a try.

Micko: Your welcome. The excellent discussions on the Matrox Gaming and Hardware forums provided an answer format.

            Today I reinstall DX 7.0

            2:00P.M.

I reinstalled DX7.0 and no difference.
            I uninstalled/reinstalled HL(1016) and no difference.
I uninstalled the 5.52 drivers, reinstalled 5.41 and Turbogl. All texture corruption is gone. The horizontal bars are there but a simple reload of that saved game gets rid of them and graphics are once again rock solid.

Downloading new copy of 5.52 in case the previous download was corrupt.

The new download of 5.52 didn't help. Half Life is completely unplayable with the 5.52 drivers.
I even tried installing the TurboGL ver 1.30: absolutely no differnce.
Switched Graphic Aperture Setting to 256 and back to 64. 256 was even worse!!
On the up side, Thief looks incredible.
If I feel the need, I guess I can always play HL on the V3

Well, I'm still working at it and even tried using the autoexec.cfg file suggested by Matrox techs and this is what I got:

Has anyone seen this before and know of a possible avenue of investigation?
PS: I was only kidding about the V3.
                I love my G400

I've seen that problem using the ICD. However, I only get the texture corruption if i alt-tab from the game and then back. Using TurboGL fixed these problems, but it disables alt-tab (not really a problem to me).

You should have seen the effect I got in Unreal, it started doing that to all the grass and sky then the textures turned to green text on black background so it was like playing in The Matrix when he sees both worlds. Looked abslolutly amazing, if I designed games I would have used that effect by now.

Don't know how to solve it though, I reinstalled to get Win98SE/W2K dual boot and it seems fine now.
                    Cheers,

I have seen the Matrix archangel and it looks awsome. I get it when using the TurboGL, but I have found a way to alter it, set the AGP aperture size in your motherboard's bios to 128 or 256

Clean install of OS solve 90% of all problems. Personaly, i do it every 2-3 months. Purge Your Windows and Prigram files DIRs, reinstall os, latest drivers and software you used, and everything will be fine, i guess.

I've seen the "Matrix" effect in Unreal when trying to use the OGL settings and 64 GAS.
But that isn't the case here.Same with 64 or 256 and am not using TGL.
I only see the colorful effects with the 5.52/ICD drivers.

Setting computer up for 1024X768X16, refresh 85hz for monitor and G400max, 5.52 drivers and ICD,
I downloaded the "official" Q2 demo to see if the problem is HL software or OGL related.

                          Q2 shows classic, full screen shearing at 1024X768x16, 800X600X16, G.A.S.64 and 256,
                          Refresh G400/Monitor, Optimal/85, 85/85, 75/75 and 72/72.
Viewsonic suggested using Std VGA 1600X1200 monitor settings which reduces refresh to 60!!!!hz. Shearing remains and its kills the eyes.
Switched G400 drivers back to 5.41 and TGL for Q2 and see full screen shearing or graphics split into very wide, offset, parallel panels with any movement, similar to what I've seen in HL.
In HL , I dont see classic shearing. Instead, even with a single tap of the mouse key, the graphics split and shift into 4-7 parallel offset panels. The closer the point of view to an object the greater the number of panels.
This effect is suppressible, in HL, by reloading that save if I am using the 5.41/TGL drivers.
If I use the 5.52 drivers and ICD, these bars are constant.

I backed up everything before I installed the 5.52 drives but I would rather not format.
                          Any other suggestions?
