HALF LIFE IS A NATIVE OPENGL GAME. IT'S D3D IS NOT SO GREAT, AND DOES NOT SHOW ALL OF THE EFFECTS PROPERLY. SEARCH THESE FORUMS, AND YOU WILL SEE MANY SUGGESTIONS FOR SPEEDING IT UP. THERE WAS A THREAD JUST LAST WEEK WITH MY VIDEO CONFIG FILE, WHICH SHOULD HELP YOUR OGL SPEEDS.

KRUZIN, KRUZIN, KRUZIN... I HAVE READ SEVERAL FORUMS THAT YOU HAVE TRIED TO CONVINCE PEOPLE THAT HALFLIFE IS NATIVE OPENGL WITH A D3D WRAPPER, BUT THAT DOESNT MEAN THAT THE OPENGL PERFORMANCE IS BETTER WITH THIS SPECIFIC CARD.

HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT THAT THE G200 ISNT OPTIMIZED(AS WELL AS IT COULD BE) FOR OPENGL... I MEAN COME ON.... HAVE YOU TRIED THE OPENGL DRIVERS.... THEY ARE PURE CRAP....THEY SLOW DOWN DURING ACTION OR HI-DETAIL AREAS(TO UNPLAYABLE FRAME RATES) .... ON THE OTHER HAND... MATROX'S G200 D3D DRIVERS PROVIDE GOOD PERFORMANCE...

IT ALSO DEPENDS ON YOUR MEMORY/PROCESSOR (WHICH MOST PPL MAY LACK VS. YOU KRUZIN)

        THE COMBINATION OF
        MATROX G200 D3D DRIVERS + HL D3D WRAPPER
        IS BETTER THAN
MATROX G200 OPENGL(CRAP) DRIVERS + HL OPENGL NATIVE ENGINE

          NEHALMISTRY,

HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT THE REASON WHY YOUR G200 WITH "CRAP" DRIVERS IS SLOW IS BECAUSE OF YOUR CRAP SS7 BOARD WITH A SLOW PROCESSOR, AND ONLY 64MB'S OF RAM? I HAVE USED A G200 FOR HL USING THOSE "CRAP" DRIVERS AND HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH SPEED, SO LONG AS I DIDN'T HAVE THE RESOLUTION UP TOO HIGH (ABOVE 800X600). THE D3D IN HL IS WORSE THAN OGL, IT IS A HACKED WRAPPER THAT ALLOWS BASIC FUNCTIONALITY TO PLAY THE GAME, BASICALLY IS SUCKS DOGS ASS.

I STILL HAVE A G200 RUNNING IN MY SECOND SYSTEM (WHICH UP TILL SATURDAY WAS A CELERON300A). I PLAY THE GAME IN OGL MODE, WITH THE FULL ICD PACKAGED WITH THE DRIVERS. I HAVE BEEN USING IT THIS WAY SINCE G200'S ICD WAS IN BETA.

I STAND BY MY OPINION. OGL IS BETTER FOR THIS GAME. NOT LARGLY FASTER, BUT SLIGHTLY FASTER IF PROPERLY CONFIGURED, AND IT LOOKS BETTER.

Listen to the wise-ones here. Before I knew any better, I was running half-life in D3D on my G200. Switched to OpenGL at 800X600 and there's no comparison in the QUALITY of the graphics. Don't recall noticing a change in FPS, but it was VERY playable on my ol' PIII450 and G200 far better in OGL.

OK.. MAYBE.. I WAS JUST TRYING TO EXPLAIN WHY ARCHON WAS GETTING BETTER RESULTS IN D3D. BUT YOU GOTTA ADMIT THAT THE MATROX OPENGL DRIVERS (IN GENERAL NOT JUST FOR HL) AREN'T AS GOOD OR EVEN CLOSE AS GOOD AS THEY SHOULD BE..

AND YOU DONT HAFTA TRY TO CONVINCE ME AT ALL....UNTIL I GET MORE RAM OR A NEW PROCESSOR.. I PLAY IN SOFTWARE MODE(400X300) .... HEY, IT LOOKS LIKE CRAP BUT AT LEAST ITS PLAYABLE...

                PS. WHATS WITH THE CAPSLOCK...

Kruzin, the cfg you posted the other day
was that for g400 or g200 or both?

                  i have a g200 on a celeron 400
which still have a little slow down during heavy fire sequences...

                  it's running on 5.03 driver on win2k at 640x480

I use that same config for both my G200 and G400...only difference being thet I run the G200 in 640x480, and the G400 in 1024x768....
