  • A good gaming computer???

With my Gee!400, which processor would u guys recommend if the choice is between a K6-2/550 or a K6-3/450? Does the extra cache on the K6-3 make up for the difference of 100mhz? Of course I'd like the K6-2+, but it seems nobody (especially AMD) is paying any attention to it - is it dead??
Finally, does both of these CPUs work well with the Gee!

My wish is to optimize the system for games like UNreal, q3, SWAT3 a.s.o.

The athlon is too heavy for my budget right now, and I really want to boost my system to make gaming FUN.

    bewellall!

The K6III is noticeably better than even the 100MHz-faster K6-2; cache+more 3DNOW instructions.
I've upgraded several times through the Kxxx series.
Read on about them under benchmarks on AMD's site.
BTW, I'd sell my 'old' K6-2/500 to you, but if you can wait (budget) for the Athlon...it's sooo worth it!

...I don't know your board, but does it have a 5.5x multiplier for that processor?
My FIC (junk) did, but my Tyan (very good board) only went to 5x=500MHz.

One thing that has been stated over and over again is that the G400 scales very well. As a part of this, the faster your CPU, the better the G400 is compared to other cards. So, on a K6-2 and K6-3, it will be acceptable for some things, but for games(if that's what you are thinking about), you should go for an Athlon. At under $200 for a 550MHz Athlon CPU, it is well worth the purchase. If you already have a K6-2 or K6-3, then the G400 will STILL be a great card, but will be slower than some of the alternatives. I expect that the G400 may run faster than a geforce with a 1GHz Athlon, but I've seen no benchmarks.

thx for your replies - I guess it's going to be the K6-3, then.

And yep, my sweeet board goes all the way to 6X!
Can't wait to see what AMD decides to do with these .18 K6-2+!
