SWAT3 locks up

within about 1-5 mins of starting the mission
the game just locks up on me and the music keeps playing and i have to reset.
and ideas why ???
i have also had illegal task error messages
and have re-installed the game twice

my system:
PII 450 MMX
Matrox G400 MAX 32mb with latest drivers
SB PCI64 soundcard with drivers
128 mb RAM
DVD player
Gravis grip multiport adapter
a friend of mine has the same hardware and has had no problems
