I switched the resolution to 1600x1200 just to try and then my screen went black and stays black all the time! Is it maybe a way to change the resolution manually?

I don't have the CD, either, so I can't reinstall it.

Isn't it supposed to ask you to accept the new resolution or something and then if you don't, revert back to the old one? I'm sure you can boot up Quake in safe mode and change it from there..... Sorry, I've never played quake so I don't know how to do it.

i don't think there is a safemode in q3, but you can do this:

edit the q3config.cfg file in the baseq3 dir.

        change the r_mode "#" to r_mode "4"

where "#" is whatever it says right now

that should fix it.. i have had that same problem many a time..

The "r_mode" thing is the way to go. I believe you can run it with the following command line to revert back to 640x480:

            quake3.exe +seta r_mode 3

            I believe 800x600 is "r_mode 4". Hope that helps!
