  • SMP q3 + g400 + windows 2000 problem

I have a dual celeron (o/c to 550) system, with 128 megs of ram running windows 2000 professional. I have installed the latest G400 beta drivers for win2k, and quake 3. there is nothing else on the system. I have a diamond mx300 soundcard.

    Problems are as follows:
    * quake works about 1/4 the time; Sometimes the computer reboots, sometimes it hangs at the title screen
    * When quake does work, it is slow! I have to turn smp on (r_smp 1 then vid_restart) in order for the mouse to behave properly, and i got a blazing 21.0 fps on demo001.dm3 with my dual 550's. I get about 42 fps in win98 with the same computer.

Any ideas? similar problems? Is the win2k driver the cause of the slowness and crashes?

    thanks

Yes, the current Win2k G400 driver has... "issues" with SMP. That's the likely root of your troubles.

what about the NT4 drivers? do they work with SMP machines? i'd run linux if id could get around to releasing a ver of q3 that used smp on linux boxes..

        UPDATE:
i just installed NT4 and got similar results; 20.3 fps with r_smp set to 1, and 23.7 fps with r_smp set to 0.

Does this mean that the G400's NT drivers just plain suck all around? why is it _HALF_ as fast as in windows 98?
