  • Tonic Trouble and Wingate Client Problem

I was wondering if any of you good folks out there has a home network with Wingate V3.05, Win98, and are running the bundled game from Mystique G200, Tonic Trouble. The game runs good with no problems by itself, on the client machine with the Mystique G200 it came with. But, when I try to connect it on the Internet through my Wingate network on the client it will not connect. I can connect and run on the Internet with no problems at at all on my server, which has a Marvel G400, a direct connection, with both dialup and a 1-way SB1200 cable modem, it does say to use port 5000 which I tried but it did not work. I have no problems with any of my computers and applications. I have lots and lots of stuff at all works great. It is just this one application game that is lets you connect to the Ubi Soft servers that will not connect through the Wingage network. The game is very nice and I really recommend it for those with children. It is really worth buying and loads of funs, if you do not recieve it from a game bundle.
    Thank you.

WinGate is a windows variant of NAT (network address translation)/ IP Masquerading. And a rather shoddy one, if you ask me. The problem with using a NAT is that you _will_ lose some functionality. Since you don't have a "real" IP address (that being an IP that the internet can directly see), some programs just won't work. Take Baldur's Gate, for example. I tried for weeks to get its multiplayer working behind my NAT and it just didn't work. Whenever I played, i was forced to disconnect my cablemodem from my FreeBSD server (Which runs NAT) and plug it directly into my main PC.
Not an ideal solution, but such is the price we pay.
NAT/IPMasq is essentially a kludgy hack, and unfortunately, not a lot of programmers take into consideration the fact that someone trying to use their product might not have a fully routable IP.
You can always bug your ISP and see if they'll give you a second IP. It usually only costs an extra $5 or $10 a month.
