  • Permanent swap file

I have experienced a few crashes in Half-Life Uplink and Kingpin. I am suspicious that this could be caused by the swap file running out.
What could be the optimum perm swap file for 3d gaming in my system?

Memory load: Powerdesk 5.41, Creative starter, Norton speedstart. My permanent swap file is set at 250 Mb. Cacheman 3.80 installed with a bit less-eating-memory-than-standard optimization.

    Oh, I´m using Win98 + service pack 1 + YK2 patch, DirectX 7, AGP 1x.

The general conventions that I use when creating perm swap files on systems is this. Up to 128 mb of RAM, use a 128 mb or 192 mb file. For 128mb of RAM to 256, use a swap file equal to the amount of RAM. Once you hit those points unless you are running a server you won't need a swap file any larger than that(or at least you shouldn't, unless of course you are working with lots of graphics editing, or CAD, or other memory intensive programs).

Ok, that was the really long answer to your question. The short answer is that your 250 mb swap file should be more than adequate.

One other thing you might want to try is droppping back to PD 5.30 and see if HalfLife still crashes.

    hope that helps.

I myself set my swap file at approx 3 times the mem in my system, atm its set at 400mb and i have had no probs, this might sound a bit large but i have to do a load of circuit board design and stuff for uni work so i use up a fair bit in gfx/circiut board design proggys. I've never had any probs running out of mem so if u can spare the space 400mb is my tip for the top : )

250MB sounds like plenty. Could you tell us more about your hardware. And your interrupts.

Thanx, guys. I also think 250Mb is enough, but you never know..

I fixed the probs in Half-Life by setting up my desktop at 16-bit color and not 32 before running the game.

I patched King-pint up to 1.21 and no problemo.
