  • Half-Life Freezes At Same Spot

I've read similar posts, but in my situation the system freezes occur at specific spots within HL. It's very predictable.
I've only recently begun playing the game, so I'm not very far -- "Office Complex". I figured it may be a conflict with my SBLive, so I disabled EAX and CD music, but still get the freeze (continuous sound loops and must do a hard reset). The only thing that got me past the first spot was to change to "software vido mode" -- there was still a hesitation when I reached that spot, but it didn't hang the system.

Any thoughts that would cause this? So far it's happened twice in Office Complex and once in the level before. Half-Life version is latest (1.0.1.3). Picture quality and frames rates are fine at 1024x768.

I have not seen this problem with any other titles such as Quake 2, Unreal, UT.

After messing around some more, I found that by removing the TurboGL it fixed the problem. Unfortunately, the TGL was giving me a good increase in fps -- with TGL about 40; without about 30 at 1024x768.
I also noticed that those spots that were hanging the system were the places that call for CD Audio.

For what it's worth, I can't use the TurboGL driver either. I have a P3-550. I've got a motherboard with a VIA chipset. I've been told that the 5.41 drivers with the VIA Chipset, and the TurboGL driver don't work together well (even with the AGP driver fix). It's been suggested I drop back down to 5.3 - I hesitate to do that since I got shutdown lockups with 5.3.

I just did a full backup, so I may try to drop down to 5.3 just to see what happens.

TurboGL would strictly be a novelty at this point since my machine is plenty fast without it.

I think that is primarily a Via Chipset issue. I have an Abit BE6 motherboard that seems to have some of it's own problems. Removing TurboGL was only a temporary fix (actually not a fix at all) as I started experiencing the problem again shortly after removing the TGL (but still have the 5.41 drivers installed). One thing I did last night that certainly helped was changing my AGP Aperture from 64 to 256MB. I am now able to get passed those spots that usually freeze my system, but it still hesitates for about 2 or 3 secs. Next I'll try forcing AGP to 1X (currently still set to 2X).

See signature for system details, I've played Half-Life on the Abit BE6 machine without any problems (using 1152x864 OpenGL). That was with the original TurboGL, though. And I didn't get any further than the middle of Surface Tension.
            Lack of time.

I have the mission pack too, it also run flawlessly for the few hours I could play it. And for OpForce I was using the new TGL and my main system too for a while.

As you can see I too have SB Live! cards with EAX and CD music enabled..

            Win98SE with DirectX7a.

The only major difference I could see between our systems is the different CD-ROM drive. Oh, and I overclock the G400 MAX in the primary sys.

Maybe you should download a crack and play without the CD in the drive.

Also some misc details I forgot in case they make a difference,

              LiveWare! 3

The Abit's BIOS is PL (11/11/1999), I have the 1.20 drivers installed for the on-board UDMA66.

I played original HL on the G400 with v1.0.1.0, OpForce was naturally v1.0.1.3.

FDS: Do you recommend updating the BIOS for the BE6? I still have whatever version came with the board (got it in August). I also have the original BIOS for the G400 as well - never really got the feeling it needed updating from other posts....

The most important thing about flashing the BE6's BIOS is that it upgrades the built-in HPT366's BIOS as well (to 1.21).

With the shipping HPT366 drivers & bios the UDMA66 part was so unreliable (frequent Windows crashes) it was next to useless. In fact I had the UDMA/66 hard drive running on as UDMA/33 for months because of this. The new drivers (1.20) and the new HPT366 BIOS (1.21) work nicely though, both under Win98SE and Win2000.

I would definitely upgrade the BE6's BIOS if you are having problems with anything. After all, if it breaks something you can always go back to the old.

I didn't flash the G400, because all three G400 cards we have already came with 1.5-22 and that is the latest (publicly) available as far as I know.

I found that HL froze at exactly the same spots everytime with PD5.41 AND turbo5.41.
After accidently playing HL at full volume, I detected music in the background at each frozen area! I then installed the latest SBlive drivers(nov/99) and LW3.0. Now I can hear the music and experience no hanging.
I have another question: When I played HL with the 5.30 drivers, I could only play in
a max of 800X600 or game would freeze and require a cold reboot. Anyone else experience this?

FDS: Thanks for the advise, I guess I better flash that mobo bios.

Derah: I've got to agree that it's definitely related to my SBLive. Although the problems started for me when I downloaded the 3.0 version -- I'm assuming thats the newest driver? I'm having difficulty finding the actual driver version and date. When I go into Device Manager an check the SBLive properties, the date says 8/26/99 and driver details lists about 10 files. The version of EMU10K1.VXD says 4.06.704 -- this does not appear to be the latest version, but I installed Liveware 3.0 without any problems.

I've acutally got HL working now, though I'm note yet completely sure what the root cause was. I found a Diagnostics tab in AudioHQ of the Liveware 3.0. Under CD Audio, when I put in a music CD and it didn't play, I clicked on the Restore tab. The music started playing and now HL works and Quake 2 also now works with CD Music enable (although I don't usually use it enabled). I've read that the Lava program can maybe mess things up, but I've only opened Lava once for about 5 minutes -- but maybe that was enough.

Thanks for the help. I would like to know how to get the latest SB drivers if I indeed have the older ones though. The Creative site only list Liveware 3.0 to download -- which I did (I think it was in November).

Oh yes, I completely forgot I too have the "November driver updates" intalled in addition to LiveWare! 3.

My emu10k1.vxd is dated November 1999 and is version 4.06.711.

Maybe this has to do something with your problem.

These drivers are the first link on www.sblive.com, but here are the direct download links for the Win9x update just in case:
                        US: ftp://www3.soundblaster.com/liveware3.0/sbl9xdrv1199.zip
                        Asia 1: http://ftp.ctlsg.creaf.com/liveware/...l9xdrv1199.zip
                        Asia 2: http://165.21.72.23/liveware/liveware3/sbl9xdrv1199.zip

To check the emu10k1.vxd version, you either go to AudioHQ's About box, or simply select Properties after right-clicking on the file and go to the Version tab. The file is in windows\system.

Great! Thanks for the link. Weird thing is, I've been going to this site...
                          http://www.soundblaster.com/home.html
for my LiveWare Updates -- there, they don't mention anything about updated drivers -- only at the sblive.com address.
Anyway, I loaded it and so far everything seems to be working fine. I'm even running TurboGL which is great because it does improve the frame rate.
