Use the "~" to get the console. type "/timedemo 1" and hit enter. Then hit ESC to close the console.

From the main screen, choose Demos. Pick either demo and run it. When it is done, hit "~" again, and it will report your FPS.

There is even a choice to show the FPS at all times when you play but I can't remember.

      The appropriate command is:

      seta cg_drawfps 1

or change the line in your config.cfg.

I've got a very similar setup, and I also had the same problems. I finally attributed all of the system freezes to my MX300. So I went to the aureal.com website and download the vortex2 reference drivers (to use instead of the monster sound application). Since I've done that, everything seems to be working fine, and now I can use A3D in Quake 3. It is a hefty download (35MB), but it might just solve your problem.
