  • Caution: 1394 Mobos

The Asus motherboard I saw on the
Web... and I think it's the same one
    mentioned in this thread...

    ...warrants CAUTION.

DV and 1394 are going through a
    very **tricky** period right now.

Microsoft has a **new** DV codec and
    capture mechanism built-in to Win98SE
    and the soon-to-be-released Win2000.
    Microsoft's **new** DirectShow capture
mechanism so far works exclusively with

    a) Ulead Systems VideoStudio
    (beginner's software-VideoStudio
is the 1st consumer package to
    support the new Microsoft capture
    scheme)

    b) Texas Instruments OHCI Firewire
    chipsets

I believe the Asus uses the TI OHCI
Firewire chipset. And I think that
    particular motherboard works exclusively
    with the Ulead VideoStudio software...
and initial reports are that it doesn't
even work well with that software.
    (Capture OK. Playback to camcorder
FLAWED). The ADS Pyro is another example
of the newer generation of Firewire boards
that don't work with Premiere or
    MediaStudio Pro:
    http://www.adstech.com/Support/pyro/...dia_studio.htm

You would want to research that very
carefully if you plan on using Ulead
    MediaStudio Pro or Adobe Premiere.

    Neither Ulead MediaStudio Pro nor
    Adobe Premiere can handle Microsoft's
    new DirectShow capture mechanism, which
captures what Microsoft refers to as
"TYPE ONE" DV video. They work with
"TYPE TWO" DV video instead and they
capture via the older "Video For Windows"
    mechanism that Microsoft is abandoning.

While Microsoft is abandoning the older
    capture mechanism... I would still
recommend buying a Canopus DV Raptor if
you plan on using Adobe Premiere or Ulead
    MediaStudio Pro for editing.

The Canopus DV Raptor **works.** I have
two of them... one on my work computer and
one on my home computer. No problems.

You can buy it for $430 if you get the
SE version (comes with a light version
of Premiere). Well worth the extra
    money.

Yep... like I thought... if you check
the Asus Web site and look up the
"specifications" on the new 1394 mobo,
you'll see Ulead VideoStudio listed as
    the included software.

    Beware. Unless you can verify
successful playback to the DV camcorder
    after you've finished editing... don't
    fall for this.

In addition, I believe it is highly
    unlikely Adobe Premiere or Ulead
MediaStudio Pro will work with the
DV video captured by this motherboard
    and the Ulead VideoStudio software.

Let's also not forget that Media Studio 6 is rumored to be announced this month so the situation may change significantly.

        Jerry,

I agree with your caution, but:
Canopus DV Raptor does NOT use video for windows capture interface.

True VFW devices remain available while Raptor is in use. You can even capture analog video with RR_G or another card that works under VFW, at the same time when you capture or play DV with Raptor. Raptor works more likely as data transferring device, like network card, but not as conventional video capture device. You may have noticed that there is no sound from the sound card while you play DV video with Raptor or use Premiere plugin with camcorder not connected to line in of soundcard.

If you try to capture video with a pair of analog capture cards, you will get "device busy" error for the second one.

This is another plus for Raptor, however.

Some time later Pyro board may become able to work with good editors. The problem is inside marketing/price/(market share) policy of Ulead, Adobe, TI, ... I suppose, but not in technology itself.
