Make sure you've got 32bit Z-Buffering enabled, especially if you're using the TurboGL. Then in the console type cg_shadows 2. This will enable stencil buffering.

Unfortunately it's so slow that it makes the game unplayable (5.41 drivers, standard GL)

I believe that´s because the ICD doesn´t really supports stencil buffer *yet*, so it does it in software mode. I may be wrong, though.

Yeah, it's a bit slow, but it does look nice. I see about a ten fps drop using this setting. That's with the TurboGL

You can try cg_shadows 3, which uses the same type on shadows seen in the intro movie, but these shadows are not affected by light sources.

where do you check and see if 32bit-z buffering is enabled?

Under Advanced settings in windows display properties, where the dualhead options are, but under 'Options'.
