  • G400 MAX in Athlon 650MHz Problem

Here's my problem. I recently ordered a 650Mhz Athlon System with a Matrox G400 Max. I can not achieve anything better than 640x480 in 16 colors. With the G400 drivers installed (any version between 5.1-5.4) my computer will only get halfway through boot before restarting. It usually restarts a few seconds after "Verifying DMI Pool..." or something like that is displayed. Anyhow, after it restarts I am given the option of running in safe mode. Whether I chose normal or safe, Win98 starts in 640x480x16. Now, if I change the driver to a standard Super VGA the system will restart without any problems. However, no matter what driver I have installed I get the message "there is a problem with the video adapter" at startup. I have a SoundBlaster Live! Platinum installed as well. I've heard that there may be some conflict between these two cards. Any ideas?

download the powerdesk registry hack from this website. Then install the force agp2x registry key. This should solve your problems. First you might want to check using wcpuid what mode your agp bus is working in. my g200 had the same problem until I forced agp2x. I didn't have the same prob. with my g400 because it automatically toook agp2x. Just find out, and see if it works for you. It worked for me

Have you installed the GART driver and stuff from AMD ?

That should be a first after you install Windows.

Personal experience has also shown me that Anything less that Windows 98SE gives problems.

dmingori i have a VERY similar problem.

I am running an Athlon 500 @ 750 with an Asus K7M motherboard.

Every morning that i bootup my computer, it gets to the point where the desktop should begin to load up but instead i get a crap load of blue, white and lots of other coloured lines. I then have to reboot in safe mode and reinstall the video card drivers, then everything works fine until the next time.

I also got that same error about a problem with the video adapter.

I still haven't figured it out, and would like to get some help. I am using PD5.41 and running windows98 SE.

This crap is pissing me off

I fixed the problem. For anyone who's wondering I just had to reseat the card, reinstall windows (98 2nd ed), install miniport agp, then install video drivers. Everything works like a charm now.

dmingori, when you say re-install windows98 SE...do you mean format your hard drive then re-install?? or just re-install Windows98 SE over your previous installation?

I have lots on my hard drive and I hope I don't have to format it
