Yes, it´s precisely that what happens. I think we´ve got a situation here...

When the game proper starts it says, unable to create selected mode (or something close) and the game is there but the colours are all totally f****d up. Does the same thing with win2k and the latest drivers.

        aaaah phoooey.

Similar problems here with Thief Gold
            (same game engine as SS2).

Game either crashes to desktop or I get the
error saying that the "selected video
            configuration not found"....or something
            like that.

Putting the older drivers back in fixes
            the problem.

Well, crashes on me, too--except my crash is a little nicer. It drops back to the Windows desktop with an error message that says "System Shock 2 will not work with your video card." Does this regardless of resolution.

Replacing the g400icd.dll with the 5.3 version did not help (which seems odd to me--isn't it what SS2 is using?), but reinstalling the 5.3 drivers did fix it.

Goofy. Um, is there an official place to post things that are broken? The Powerdesk group?

Same on my Athlon 650, just quits to Windows. However, when I re-installed back to 5.3 everything was ok.

I don't have System Shock 2, but I do have the same problem with PowerDesk 5.41 with Thief and Thief Gold. The exact error message is: "The requested screen mode could not be set." The game runs, but falls back to what appears to be software mode at 640x480 (or some other absurdly low resolution), with no filtering, and severely messed up water and sky textures.

The game works perfectly if I switch to my Voodoo2 card, or if I downgrade PowerDesk to 5.30.

What is the best way to submit a formal bug report to Matrox? Maybe we should all report the problem, so that it can be fixed ASAP.

I just got this from matrox tech support. I emailed them about the system shock 2/5.41 driver problem:

                    Dear Sir,
This is a reported bug and we are suggesting that you go back to the 5.30
drivers until corrected drivers are released.
