  • Q3Demo and DirectX?

I've never played the Q3 Demo. Does it have a D3D mode. I'm running Windows 2000 RC3, so I can't use OpenGL. If so, how do I get the demo to run in DirectX mode?

Why would they limit there market concerning API's? A LOT of video cards have problems with OpenGL, so you'd think they would port at LEAST to TWO API's. Well, sorry to say, they just lost a sale to UT.

        Everettes,

I hate to sound insulting, but are you totally clueless? Considering that the full Win2k drivers WITH OpenGL have been out for 48 hours or more, and the announcement of them is ALL OVER THIS MESSAGE BOARD, you'd think you would have already downloaded them and discovered that they do, in fact, work with Quake3.

As for why Q3 is OpenGL only... that is a question with a long history. Suffice it to say the only API that can render this game is OpenGL. Period.

Please Gurm, don't get me worked up with an insulting post like that. I HAVE the latest WIN2k Drivers. And if you had a clue you'd see that I'm not the only one having OpenGL problems here in Win2k. Check the other groups. Suffice it to say that the OpenGL drivers don't work on _MY_ system. How in the heck did you turn a simple request into your emotional band-wagon?

BTW, if it makes a difference. You'll notice I'm refering to the demo, as stated in the original post.

Ok, sorry to sound insulting (you'll note I apologized in advance...), here we go:

              1. Your system CAN be made to work with OpenGL under Win2k, it may just take some doing.

              2. The reasons Quake3 isn't rendered under D3D are as follows:

              - Single codebase for Macintosh, Linux, Windows, SGI means OpenGL is necessary.
              - There were (as recently as 6 months ago) a lot of things which were really obtuse in D3D which were easier in OpenGL.
              - OpenGL is more robust (still).
              - OpenGL is more extensible (still).

              - Ash

Thanks for the response. Any suggestion on how to get the OpenGL to work in RC3 with the new drivers? :-)
