  • Quake3 TurboGL vs. ICD benchmarks - groovus!!!

Finally got TurboGL working with Q3 (thanks Scytale!) and benched it vs. the ICD. Check my sig for system specs, basically a G400Max on a P3-450 with no overclocking.

    32-bit color depth, 32-bit textures, demo1
    640x480: 32.5 (ICD), 50.9 (TurboGL)
    800x600: 32.1 (ICD), 48.9 (TurboGL)
    1024x768: 30.4 (ICD), 35.4 (TurboGL)

    32-bit color depth, 32-bit textures, demo2
    640x480: 30.9 (ICD), 48.4 (TurboGL)
    800x600: 30.7 (ICD), 47.6 (TurboGL)
    1024x768: 29.5 (ICD), 34.9 (TurboGL)

    16-bit color depth, 16-bit textures, demo1
    640x480: 32.2 (ICD), 51.2 (TurboGL)
    800x600: 32.4 (ICD), 50.8 (TurboGL)
    1024x768: 31.5 (ICD), 44.6 (TurboGL)

    16-bit color depth, 16-bit textures, demo2
    640x480: 30.7 (ICD), 48.5 (TurboGL)
    800x600: 30.7 (ICD), 48.4 (TurboGL)
    1024x768: 29.9 (ICD), 44.6 (TurboGL)

As you can see I start to drop fps going to 32-bit at 1024x768, but at resolutions below that it doesn't cost me anything to run at 32-bit vs. 16-bit. 48 fps at 800x600x32? I believe I can manage nicely with that. Outstanding work on the TurboGL, Matrox!

Updated with comparison to Voodoo3 3000!

Recall the benchmarks for the P3-450/G400Max setup listed in my specs:

    32-bit color depth, 32-bit textures, demo1
    640x480: 32.5 (ICD), 50.9 (TurboGL)
    800x600: 32.1 (ICD), 48.9 (TurboGL)
    1024x768: 30.4 (ICD), 35.4 (TurboGL)

    32-bit color depth, 32-bit textures, demo2
    640x480: 30.9 (ICD), 48.4 (TurboGL)
    800x600: 30.7 (ICD), 47.6 (TurboGL)
    1024x768: 29.5 (ICD), 34.9 (TurboGL)

    16-bit color depth, 16-bit textures, demo1
    640x480: 32.2 (ICD), 51.2 (TurboGL)
    800x600: 32.4 (ICD), 50.8 (TurboGL)
    1024x768: 31.5 (ICD), 44.6 (TurboGL)

    16-bit color depth, 16-bit textures, demo2
    640x480: 30.7 (ICD), 48.5 (TurboGL)
    800x600: 30.7 (ICD), 48.4 (TurboGL)
    1024x768: 29.9 (ICD), 44.6 (TurboGL)

    Now compare those to a Voodoo3 3000 with a P3-450 on a generic (Gateway) 440BX motherboard, 256MB PC100 RAM, Q3 "normal" setting:

    16-bit color depth, 16-bit textures, V3 demo1
    640x480: 44.3
    800x600: 43.6
    1024x768: 39.2

    16-bit color depth, 16-bit textures, V3 demo2
    640x480: 42.4
    800x600: 41.9
    1024x768: 39.0

The TurboGL at 16-bit is faster than the Voodoo3 3000 at all speeds, and the TurboGL at 32-bit is faster than the V3 at 16-bit at resolutions under 1024x768. I'm suitably impressed.

Nice overview... I think it's safe to conclude that 800/32 is the sweet spot for the G400(32MB)/Q3/TGL combo. At this res Q3 looks great and performance is downright excellent - TurboGL really shines at this res.

Maniac, the numbers for 1024x768 at 16-bit and 32-bit were 44.6 and 35.4 respectively. That was in my earlier posts but may have been difficult to pull out of all the numbers. I didn't have an easy way to make a table with the posting system, so it's a bit of a mess.

Oops, Maniac, I misread your question. I'll try 1024x768x32 with 16-bit textures when I get home tonight.

Good benchmarks, but I hope your TEXTURE DETAIL SLIDER was at 4/4 FULL position. I`m right?
              Bilinear or trilinear ?

1024x768x32x32 35.4fps DOH!! Love this resolution, but I got 21.2fps without TGL.

              bye

                John,

No, I left my texture slider at 3/4, which was the default "normal" setting. I also left filtering on bilinear. I may try to bench the 4/4 and trilinear settings tonight if my 3-year-old lets me "share" the computer tonight (he's got a few computer games of his own).

                  Some numbers y'all requested:

                  Maniac:

                  1024x768x32depth/16-bit textures: 37.6 fps
                  1024x768x32depth/32-bit textures: 35.4 fps
                  both with TurboGL

                  John Rambo:
                  P3-450, 192 MB RAM, G400Max, no overclock
TurboGL, trilinear filter, texture slider 4/4

                  640x480: 45.6 demo1, 46.1 demo2
                  800x600: 35.0 demo1, 35.6 demo2
                  1024x768: 23.1 demo1, 22.6 demo2

Trilinear filtering and 4/4 textures starts to choke it up on this setup. I'm going to run at 800x600x32 with 32-bit textures and 3/4 texture quality.

                    Wanna hear something weird???

With all my settings at max (32-bit everything, slider to full detail, tri-linear filtering) at 1024x768 my TurboGL is slower than the regular ICD.

                    ICD=20 FPS
                    TurboGL= 17.7 FPS

                    What's up with that?!?!?!

Can anybody confirm this, or is something hosed???

                    My sys:
                    PIII 500, 128 Meg, G400.....

What?!?!? My TurboGL is slower then the regular ICD in all comparisons!?!?!?! What up!?!?!? Can anybody make since of this???

                      I just ran:
                      32-bit color depth, 32-bit textures, demo1
                      Bi-linear, slide bar at 3/4.
                      1024x768: 27.3(ICD), 24(TurboGL)

Thanks everybody for your help getting things working with the TurboGl.

I had trouble forgetting to change resolutions back after a game, so came up with this simple batch file to do it for me.

                            copy g400_q3config.cfg q3config.cfg /y
                            cd ..
                            quake3.exe

Just put that in a file called g400.bat in your \demoq3 directory, and run you shortcut to that instead of to quake3.exe

Make sure you have a config file with the resolution set to 800X600X32 called g400_q3config.cfg in the same directory.

                            Hope this helps someone.

                            Oh yeah, bench marks.

                            1024X768X32X32 4/4 slider, bilinear 47.5fps on demo001

                            P3 @ 618 and G400 @ 120%

If I run the CPU at 672 (6*112, 2.3V) and everything else the same I only get 45.2fps (and the occasional crash). Strange.
