  • Video Distortion capturing from VCR to Marvel G200; Avid

I've been lurking here since getting my Marvel G200 a couple
months ago, and now hope to have some questions answered by
    the knowledgeable folks here.

What happens is when capturing (or just displaying) from VCR,
the bottom 6 or 7 or so lines are distorted horizontally; the
effect on a vertical line would be sort of

where it's off horizontally and wiggles back and forth.
Doesn't happen from TV tuner, and I can't remember noticing
it happening from my Hi-8 camcorder.

VCR is a brand spanking new Panasonic PV-S7680, and I
get the distortion both from S-Video and composite outputs.
I also got it using another Philips VCR but charged it
off to tracking. I've run the tracking for this VCR its
entire range and it has no effect.

I'm wanting to copy some of my VHS videos to .mpg so to be
able to watch more conveniently on computer and not wear them
out, and would like to take care of this distortion if possible.

Oh, another thing, I also got a Sima Color Corrector and it
has no effect on this distortion either (in some cases it
makes the video worse as well). I don't believe the tapes
I'm trying to copy are macrovision protected.

I'm a little disappointed in the VCR too, getting magenta
splotches in blue sky on playback of a commercially recorded tape.

    System:
    - GigaByte GA6BXE
    - PII-400, bog standard clocking
    - 128M RAM
    - Marvel G200 AGP, not overclocked
    - Ensoniq clone PCI sound card
    - Adaptec 2940U SCSI with CDROM, CD-RW, DAT, scanner
    - Windows 95 OSR2
    - Matrox SW version as came on install CD, using PC-VCR to capture
    - OS on WD 21600
    - capture to IBM 16.8G, 10G FAT32 partition, DMA enabled, gets just
    over 4 MB/sec.

    Avid Cinema:

Actually, I did use Avid to make a .mov file of my cousin's kids
that I had shot on Hi-8 (he is Mac-challenged so I figured quicktime
would work best). It seemed OK to me, was able to assemble
clips, split them, put in dissolves and titles. Only complaint I
had was that the final output options were limited, and I had to
use Avid to capture. What are the top ten complaints about Avid
    from the more experienced here?

    Thanks,
    Mikey

Well, it seems that my graphic description is inaccurate,
since this web page deletes leading spaces.

    The distortion looks like

for vertical lines (they are smeared to the right).
    Hope that's better...
