  • Ultima 9 Ascension

    As some of you probably know G400 had poor performance on the Ultima9 demo. However I got into some tweaking, but can't find one thing maybe someone can help me, how do you turn off v-sync for Direct 3D?

    Download the registry tweaks from www.murc.ws and use the one called "Disable VSYNC". Alternatively, add the following into your registry.

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Class\Display\0000\Settings\DirectX]
    "FlipOnVblank"="0"

    I can't figure out how to tweak UA to resolutions higher than 640 by 480. Editing the config file causes the game to run at different resolutions, but the toolbars are placed weirdly and the game crashes. The demo is quite unstable anyway; it crashes a lot for me. But I'm not very worried since the full game should run very well on a G400.

      I'm curious....where the hell do you find the demo for this? I want it!
      Wah! Wah!

          You can also get the demo by purchasing this month's edition of Computer Gaming World (CGW) with the CD-ROM inserts. UA comes on its own CD at around 450 Mb (try d/ling THAT with my puny 56k modem)!

          Running it on a P3-450, 128Mb RAM and SB Live!Value, the G400 Max performs adequately when the resolution and textures are cranked to full, but there is still some artifacting and choppiness. According to the "readme" file, the G400 card under D3D is supported (as are the TNT and TNT2). Under my Voodoo 3 2KP, though, the game rocks (Glide was the original API used and seems to have the best support). I'm sure Origin will have the D3D code optimized by shipping time. EBMB might even be supported at some time in the future, but that's probably just wishful thinking on my part

            EMBM won't be supported. The current code for U:A doesn't support EMBM and since U:A is in QA now, no more major code changes will be made. So, too bad. No EMBM. But the water looks quite cool already, and the depth of the water affects lighting. Quite all right, if you ask me.

            Oh yeah, you have to download the 16-bit bitmap texture fix if you want to run the demo with 16-bit textures. The texture file that came with the demo is corrupted; its size is measured in KB, while the actual file is almost 100MB. Go to the U:A Bulletin Boards to find the sites you can download the 40MB zipped patch at.

              It was just announced that the game has officially gone gold. It'll be on store shelves before Nov 24th. Hopefully, the full version will have all the bugs ironed out.
