  • 3D newbie needs help...

I've just installed my first 3D card, a G400 16Mb. How do I get Quake 2 to work with it for full hardware 3D acceleration?

My system is a Celeron 466 with 128Mb RAM, Win98SE and the latest version of PowerDesk. I've tried selecting "default OpenGL" in the video options of Q2, but it keeps saying "hardware acceleration not detected" and dropping me back into software graphics.

    All help gratefully received!

First thing to check is your desktop color depth. It must be in 16bit or 32bit. 24bit color is not hardware accelerated.

If that's not the problem, make sure you have an IRQ assigned to VGA enabled in the BIOS, and that your video boot order is AGP/PCI, not PCI/AGP.

If none of those do the trick, give us a listing of your system IRQ assignments...

        >24bit color is not hardware accelerated.

That could well be it - I run in 24-bit as standard. But just in case it isn't...

        >your video boot order is AGP/PCI, not
        >PCI/AGP.

I've never heard of "video boot order" before - is it something within the mobo BIOS?

          Yes, it's a bios option.
But if your desktop is in 24bit, we have probably found your problem...
