  • My Matrox Millenium and Win98

    Hi!

Is it really that bad, that I cant run Windows 98 together with my Matrox Millenium G400 card. ???

When installing Win98 everything works just great until I install and select the G400. Two different scenarios occurs (I have formated and installed Win98 6 times). 1 scenario is a error box saying "Kernell32.dll cauesed a general protection fault..."
leading to Win98 totally freases and a blue screen with a lot of
    white text and numbers occurs.

The other scenario is almost the same, but this time it says
"problem with the system registry" and almost the same result occurs.

Now I run Win95, and even if the system registry message shows up every now and then, it want freese, and I can continue to work. But owning Win98 it feels very bad not to be able to use it because of this..

    Any help is very appriciated!

    Thanks

    Michael Cedergren

Please tell us more about your computer. What hardware, software, drivers. That will help us out a lot.

Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

      I use a P2 400 with 128 MB RAM.
The software is only Win98 SE version (or something like that)
I don´t have the latest Matrox drivers, but very much don´t think it will have any thing to do with these lockups

Perhaps a conflict with my Sound Blaster ISA card??? (it does not however suggest a conflict)

Start installing Win 98 with only the G400 in your system.
Remove all other peripherals (sound card, modem, SCSI card.)

Then if it’s working ok, add one card at a time.
And verify if the system is stable after each installation.

I have seen this error you are getting with systems that had a UMAX SCANNER with a SCSI card and UMAX has a patch for it.

Also you should tell us what brand of motherboard you have .

          Hi,

I also had real problems when installing my G400. I have an AMD K6-2 400, and a FIC VIA Motherboard. In the end the problem was due to a VIA AGP fix which is required, the FIC one is at http://www.fic.com.tw (look under VA-503+) Check your motherboard supplier for information. I could not actually get the screen to run at all when in Win 98, but Win NT worked like a dream!

          Cheers,

          Richie

I have same problem too. My G400 Max cannot run window 98. It always freeze up after I install the drivers. I tried all versions...format c: drive install window 98 with only the G400 Max on board...nuthing work. But it work fine in window 95 only that I cannot run Expendable. It always crash back to desktop. I have a Celeron 300a overclock 450. Abit BX6 2.0....Scsi card...soundblaster live and a Us Robotics modem.
