  • Quake II and G400 Max

Just upgraded to the G400 Max from the G200.

Quake II doesn't work in OpenGL anymore. When I try to load it in OpenGL I get the following error (using 5.13 Powerdesk and 1.5 bios):

    LoadLibrary("ref_gl.dll") failed

Then it reverts to Software mode.

Any ideas on how to fix this would be appricated.

If you have Multi-Monitor mode enabled, that would do it...OGL will not work with MM mode...

I have the dual head feature disabled. So that is most likely not it.

      Any more ideas?

      Thanks.

        hmm...
Are you running in 24bit color depth?
If so, you must be in either 16bit or 32bit...24bit gets no 3d acceleration....

How have you uninstalled G200 drivers? Manually or with the Matrox uninstaller?
          Does direct3d work?

I am using 32 bit color at 1024x768.

I used the uninstaller software to move from 4.XX to the current 5.13.

Interestingly enough, when I look at the PowerDesk and go to the information tab it tells me this:

            Bios: 1.5 - 22
            Display Driver: 4.11.01.1130
            Mini-VDD: 4.11.01.1130
            Matrox Powerdesk: 5.13.020
            Direct Draw: 4.11.01.1130
            DirectX: 4.06.02.0436

I thougt I installed the drivers but I guess the powerdesk does recognize it or I messed up.

            Thanks for the help

No...those numbers are correct. Go by the Powerdesk version listed...driver versions are a different set of numbers...

Where you using the wrapper with your G200? If so, that needs to be removed from your q2 folder...

Yes, I was using the D3D wrapper with the G200.

How exactly do I remove that? Any ideas?

Also, is the ref_gl.dll file corrupt? Do I require a new one of those?

                Thanks.

To remove the wrapper, just go to your quake2 folder, and delete the file opengl32.dll. Hopefully that will do the trick...

I removed the opengl32.dll file and still no luck. Same error.

Its weird, Halflife works fine, the demo game on the CD works fine - no problems at all.

But Quake 2 just doesnt want to work in OpenGL mode.

                    Thanks for the help

                      Try to delete/rename the config.cfg.

If that still doesn´t work, a fresh install of Quake2 woudn´t hurt.

And try to copy glu32.dll and opengl32.dll from the windows cd .cab files (30 and 35 I guess) to \windows\system. Some software currupts/replace these files. A long shot, but worth a try.
