  • Quake and G200 v4.11 Drivers

    Does Quake1 support D3D or do I have to install d3d_wrapper3.zip and/or glquake1.exe?
And are these two drivers easy to uninstall?

No, Quake is an OpenGL only game. You should try the latest drivers, version 5.13, which you can get from Matrox's website at www.matrox.com They contain the latest OpenGL ICD for both the G200 and the G400.

I was just at the Quake1 web site and it says that only a VGA Graphics Card is required. There was no mention of OpenGL. Are you being confused with Quake2 and/or Quake3?

nah, he's suggesting that if you want to play quake in 3d accelerated mode... you need to have the latest and greatest matrox drivers (namely the opengl ICD) for the g200 or g400. There are several binaries (the .exe files for you newbies) for quake. There is a dos binary, a windows binary (it uses directx's directdraw (no 3d acceleration here), and a glquake binary. If you wan't to run quake with all the fancy 3d accelerated eyecandy you need to use the glquake binary. The latest version is 1.09 and is basically a final version as far as id is concerned.

Also, if you plan to play quake over the internet you might as well get glquakeworld. Glquakeworld is basically quake optimized for internet play. The rule of thumb is to use glquake for lan multiplayer or single player and use glquakeworld for internet multiplayer.

Sounds like alot to download and setup but it really isn't in the end.

P.S. - For the record, yes we are talking about quake1... we're not talking about quake2 or quake3 or even quake4 for that matter... heh
