  • Q3test on G400

I was just curious if anyone had done any benchmarks on the G400 with the new version of q3test.

    Q3 Test 1.06
    PII 450 128Mb Win98
G400 SH 16Mb non overclocked (it refuses any kind of overclocking dunno why, maybe heat)
    Drivers 5.13

    1024x768x32 all 3D settings on:

    q3testdemo1 30.1 fps
    q3testdemo2 35.0 fps

1024x768x16 many 3D settings off (tuned with q3tweak, game looks different but still acceptable):

    q3testdemo1 44.3 fps
    q3testdemo2 51.7 fps

Overall playability is anyway good, even if I surely expected something more before running the tests.

    Visual quality is top-notch.

You will find this card inadeguate only if you tried the game with 2 Voodo 2 or overclocked TNT 2 Ultra models (tried a Xentor 32 Ultra and the speed is almost double with only slightly less quality).

If you seek pure speed and decent quality, go TNT 2 Ultra. If you seek quality for your eyes and decent playability, go with the G400.

My personal choice was to keep the 2 Voodoo 2 SLI combined with the G400, since I'm too used to the 75 fps of the SLI to play Q2 at 55 with the G400 in online multiplay (contrary to popular belief, more fps DO make difference in gameplay feelings and they are even bigger in multiplay scenarios, you will even notice the difference between 120 and 150. BTW Q3 is capped to 100 - but this is another story ).

If you're coming from TNT 1, single V2, or G200, your gaming experience will be surely better.

    Hope this helps

Thanks for the post Nereid. I have a TNT right now, and have a G400 DH 32 Mb on the way. For anyone who wants to some reference this is about what I got on my TNT.

      System:

Win 98, 128 Mb RAM, Asus V3400 TNT (boxed drivers), 6.4 Gb IBM, 8.4 Gb Maxtor ...

      q3testdemo1 800x600x16
      20~22 fps

Same specs, but Win2k Beta3 and 1.88 reference drivers

      800x600x16
      25~27 fps

I will do some more benchmarks later tonight.

What the heck is wrong with my card/setup?
        Using pd 5.13 on OEMG400
        q3testdemo1
        640x 24.3fps
        800x 22.7fps
Graphics settings at default (16 bit color, high geo detail, etc)

And I was wondering about my Q2 scores as well:
        demo1
        640x 50.7fps
        800x 49.8
        1024x 47.4
        1152x 44.3

And for reference, my V2 scores (single 12mb)
        640x 77.4 fps
        800x 62.7

I admit the higher res and eye candy is nice..but I expected more from a card almost two years newer.

            I have a TNT Spectra 2500.
            I get 36,8 fps in q3 1.07 q3testdemo1

            that's in 640x480.

Can't live with anything lesser than 35 fps awerage

Hey Tallamvor did you do anything special to make Q3test work in Windows 2000? I have RC1 and no go, only get "can't open OpenGl Subsystem" error message.

            Cheers,
